Not known for its affordability, a week in Las Vegas can drain a bank account in the blink of an eye. Between steak dinners, spa treatments, and keeping a seat at the blackjack table, sometimes a wallet needs a little reprieve.
The following seven free attractions in Sin City are the best way to keep entertained while still pinching pennies.
1. The Wildlife Habitat
Take a break from the neon lights and get back to nature with the Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo. Exotic birds, fish, and turtles are spread over 15 acres; the highlight of the popular attraction is, appropriately, Flamingo Island, home to a flock of Chilean flamingos. Swans, ducks, koi, mockingbirds, and rescue pelicans live within the boundaries of the habitat.
Location: Flamingo Las Vegas, 3555 S. Las Vegas Blvd.
2. Rock n’ Roll Wine Tastings
Classic music meets fruit from the vine at Rock n’ Roll Wine, where founders have attempted to make wine “less pretentious through music to attract millennial drinkers.” The company runs well-known Wine Amplified Music festivals and hosts free weekly wine tastings at rotating locations. Each tasting features a red and white blend, with additional surprises on a week-to-week basis. RSVP in advance.
3. Bellagio Conservatory
The seasonal displays at the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens represent everything good about the Las Vegas way of life. A mix of beauty and over-the-top extravagance, it takes a whole team of horticulturalists and designers to put together the displays, which change four times a year. Currently, the winter exhibit is on display with an abundance of poinsettias and giant stockings hanging from the ceiling. The holiday exhibit will run through Jan. 3.
Location: Bellagio Hotel and Casino, 3600 S. Las Vegas Blvd.
4. Fremont Street Experience
The Viva Vision LED light show takes place under a 1,500 foot-long canopy every night of the week at the Fremont Street Experience, often coupled with live music on three different stages. Along with the light shows, visitors can fly under the canopy with the SlotZilla zipline (purchase required), visit the Neon Museum dedicated to saving and preserving vintage neon signs, and check out what $1 million in cash really looks like at Binion’s Casino.
Location: Fremont Street, Las Vegas.
5. First Friday
An artsy block party kicks off in downtown Vegas on the first Friday of every month. Folks gather around live music, food, street vendors, and art galleries. Visitors can stroll through the Art District’s many galleries, sip on wine (purchase required), and appreciate the local talent. First Friday artworks include charcoal drawings, pen and ink drawings, hatchings, cave paintings, oil paintings, and more. For a list of vendors, click here.
Location: Arts District, downtown Las Vegas.
6. Whiskey Tasting at Vom Fass
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, an informal class called, “The Whiskey Experience” takes place at 7 p.m. Participants can taste two scotches, one Irish whiskey, and one burbon free of charge while they learn about various kinds of scotches, blends, and single malts. Vom Fass also offers vinegars, oils, and wines from around the world. Reservations are required; click here for more information.
Location: The Venetian, 3355 S. Las Vegas Blvd.
7. Rock Climbing
As great as the city of Las Vegas is, sometimes it’s necessary to leave it all behind and return to nature. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers some of the nation’s premiere sandstone climbing locations. Hot spots in the Southern Nevada District include Keyhole Canyon, a quartz monzonite; Arrow Canyon, where terrain varies from vertical climbing to overhung cave climbing; and The Urban Crag, a limestone climb. Location: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 1000 Scenic Loop Dr., Las Vegas.
