Las Vegas-based casino operator Full House Resorts has proposed a $650 million resort on the site of a razed airport terminal and its nearby parking lots in Indianapolis. The town’s Airport Authority will soon be putting hundreds of acres up for sale or lease for non-aviation purposes and Full House wants to build a casino by the name of “American Place.”
The proposed development would be 700,000-square-feet of retail space anchored by a casino with table games and roughly 700 slot machines. Space not taken up by the casino would include condos, restaurants, offices, a conference center, a gym, and a movie theater.
“We can build something here that doesn’t exist anywhere else”, Full House CEO Dan Lee said.
The new venture is expected to create 4,000 permanent jobs, attract 10 to 15 million yearly visitors, and generate $85 million per year in state and local taxes. American Place would feature only a small, 25-room hotel to cater to high rollers; others would be expected to stay at existing hotels, with American Place providing shuttles to and from, according to Lee.
Currently, Full House operates Rising Star Casino in Rising Sun, Indiana (along with others in Nevada and Mississippi). The company would transfer half of the 1,400 slot machines licensed for Rising Star if American Place becomes a reality.
Historically, legislators have been against allowing casinos in Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Star. The state allows ten riverboat casinos on Lake Michigan and the Ohio River, one land-based casino, and two horse racing tracks.
Caesars and Trump have both operated casinos in Indiana. But American Place represents the first real attempt to bring a casino to Indianapolis in roughly 20 years.
