Mark Davis’ desperation to get the Raiders out of Oakland has landed in Las Vegas in a big way this year. In September, a Nevada oversight committee approved a recommendation for $750 million in public funding for a stadium. Last week, Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill that approved raising hotel taxes to meet the $750 million in funds, and the city has prepared itself for all the madness that comes with an NFL team.
However, Davis’ biggest Vegas partner, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, recently suggested he may not be as committed to the deal as he previously seemed. According to Reuters, Adelson, owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corp, said in a press conference that negotiations hadn’t been going as smoothly as he hoped.
“They want so much,” Adelson said. “So I told my people, ‘Tell them I could live with the deal, I could live without the deal. Here’s the way it’s gonna go down. If they don’t want it, bye-bye.’”
The billionaire is a key part of the Raiders deal – particularly the building of the new NFL stadium.
The stadium is predicted to cost a total of $1.9 billion and seat 65,000. The bill for the massive piece of infrastructure would come from a combination of the previously mentioned public funding, plus $500 million from the Raiders and $650 million from Adelson.
Without Adelson’s support, it is unclear if the move and stadium will come to fruition. In addition to Adelson, the move would require approval from three-quarters of NFL franchise owners, a decision that is expected early next year.
In Nevada, public policy leaders seem to think the move would only help the city thrive.
“We get an NFL team, and that is a significant step forward for Las Vegas and the community,” Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee Chairman Steve Hill told the NFL. “Those teams bring the community together. We’re going to have people wearing Raiders jerseys and high-fiving each other … That’s not something you can put a number on.”
