It was a dramatic weekend on the Strip after two separate incidents left a person dead in one shooting and led to a lockdown at the Bellagio hotel and casino in another.
On Saturday morning, a gunman identified as 55-year-old Rolando Cardenas, allegedly opened fire from the back of a public bus on the Strip. Police say he pulled a gun while riding a double-decker bus and started shooting, killing a tourist and injuring another.
Cardenas then barricaded himself on the bus and initiated an hours-long standoff with police before surrendering. He is currently in jail and being charged with murder, attempted murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm within a vehicle and burglary with possession of a firearm.
The incident led to a seven-hour shut down of the Strip that ended late Saturday afternoon. The shooting occurred near the Cosmopolitan, where former NBA player Scot Pollard is staying.
Pollard told the Associated Press, “We can hear them negotiating. We can hear them saying things like ‘No one else needs to get hurt,’ ‘Come out with your hands up. We are not going anywhere. We are not leaving,'” he said.
According to the L.A. Times, this is the 35th Las Vegas homicide so far this year. The victim has been identified as Gary Breitling, 57, of Montana.
And that wasn’t the only drama that took place on the Strip. Earlier that day, a team of burglars broke into a jewelry store inside of the Bellagio, which led to a half-hour lockdown. The thieves wore formal apparel and animal masks, and used sledgehammers to bust the store’s windows.
Police said the suspects fled to a nearby parking garage and one has been detained. A bystander tweeted that the store robbed was Rolex, but police have not confirmed any details beyond “high-end jewelry store.”
The two incidents are not believed to be related.
