Four years ago, online poker giants PokerStars and Full Tilt were banned from operating in the United States. But the two sites have fallen back into favor in the Garden State. This week, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) granted approval to both, bringing the sites, owned by Amaya Gaming Group, back stateside.
“We are very pleased to add New Jersey to the long list of regulated markets that have found PokerStars and Full Tilt suitable to offer real-money online gaming,” David Baazov, Chairman and CEO of Amaya, said in a press release. “I want to thank the DGE for their thorough and fair review of our business. We look forward to bringing our popular brands, innovative technology, marketing prowess and world-class security and game integrity to the growing New Jersey online gaming market.”
The process of approving the online gambling sites included sworn statements by 70 individuals, and Amaya is currently party to an agreement with Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City to provide online poker and casino offerings. PokerStars (the world’s largest online poker site) and Full Tilt join sites like WSOP.com, 888, Party Poker, and Borgata – all of which are already operating in New Jersey.
“Since the acquisition, we have consistently delivered on our stated strategy,” said Baazov. “… We are excited about our new product pipeline and enthusiastic that we will experience growth in existing and emerging markets in the future.”
Amaya NJ, a subsidiary of Amaya, is expected to run PokerStars in New Jersey.
In 2012, PokerStars bought former competitor Full Tilt Poker for $731 million. Then in 2014, Amaya, a Canadian-based corporation, bought PokerStars and its parent company for $4.9 billion.
PokerStars recently wrapped up the World Championship of Online Poker Main Event (WCOOP), where the final table was comprised of players from Belgium, Poland, Canada, Russia, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. The ultimate winner, Belgium’s “Coenaldinho7,” was paid out $1.3 million.
