Some tourists from Hawai’i had their trip to Vegas pretty well ruined on Wednesday afternoon when a teenager riding the Fremont Street Experience zipline yanked down his Hanes and peed on their heads.
Horror stories like that are usually reserved for the nighttime debauchery that abounds in Sin City. But it just goes to show that, at every turn, you have to be on the lookout for hooligans out to ruin your stay!
What are some of the main shennanigans you should be on the lookout for?
Today, I’ll put my ample Vegas knowledge and experience to good use and provide a safety handbook of sorts.
4. The long way home
Did you know that not all taxi drivers are scrupulous angels? Some will even take you on unnecessarily long routes to and from the airport (or that hot bar you’re testing out) just to jack up the price of the ride. Look at a map before you set out and be ready to call them on seemingly random turns!
3. The date and dash (aka stranger danger)
A lot of people actually do hit it big at the tables in Vegas, but tread with caution if someone claims to be one of them and asks you on a date to celebrate. They’re just as likely to be a grifter looking for a free meal. After luring you to one of the city’s best steakhouses, they’re liable to duck out to the water closet and leave you high and dry with the bill.
2. The overcharge
A lot of things in Vegas are expensive, and rightfully so. Those Cirque du Soleil acrobats put in their 10,000 hours and deserve to be remunerated accordingly. Pay up! Some items are just a straight up racquet, though. If you’re playing it fast and loose with your billfold, you could end up paying $500 for a cognac, $1,000 for a sundae, or $250,000 to rent the Bellagio fountains. Do not do these things.
1. The clean and jerk
Be extra careful when using washrooms in Vegas. For years, ladies have had their purses snatched by thieves reaching over the stalls. (There’s not much you can do when your pants are around your ankles.) There’s also a concerning trend of Vegas residents trying to kill people with toilet seats. Ok, it was just one guy but, call me old fashion, I still find that concerning.
