Las Vegas has plenty of options for entertainment, regardless of your preferred speed. If you are passing on the elaborate and expensive shows, live music might be up your alley. Lucky for you, Sin City has many cool venues. Here are my five favorites.
Depending on the day, rock music is the most likely genre here, but country and even comedy get their turn too. You can find big names (Coldplay, The Killers, Kenny Chesney) and up-and-comers, but very few space fillers. Twenty-five-foot speaker bays and several plasma screens give this a legitimate big-time rock feel. You won’t be disappointed at a venue that was built for the music lover.
Like the Hard Rock, The Pearl gets big-ticket artists. Unlike the Hard Rock, The Pearl puts on shows in an intimate environment. While there are several private boxes that often house celebrities, the whole house holds fewer than 3,000 people. The stage is barely off the floor, and no seat is more than a football field from the performers. The Pearl creates a unique, almost hands-on experience.
Remember those old “choose your own adventure” books? The Brooklyn Bowl is the musical version of that. It’s 80,000 square feet in size, but sectioned off in such a way that you can decide on your own experience for the night. There are a bunch of different bars, a bowling alley, and a small concert arena, but regardless of where you go, you can hear the music clearly. (Don’t worry about the sound of pins: the acoustics muffle the bowling and accentuate the tunes.) The venue does a great job of mixing up its performers, so just check their schedule, find one you like, and enjoy a truly unique evening of live music.
Opened in 1976, the Sand Dollar Blues Bar has hosted legends like B.B. King and Muddy Waters. It was closed in 2007, but reopened two years later. A true hole-in-the-wall off the strip, the venue is frequently uncrowded. That makes it a music haven for those who are in it for the sound instead of the fury.
House of Blues may be housed at the massive Mandalay Bay Resort, but it still gives me the warm and fuzzies. There is just something comforting about a club that hosts a “Gospel Brunch” and mixes and matches A-list acts with people trying to make it. For a more laid back evening, ask about the not-really-advertised theater seating upstairs, then cruise around to the myriad bars which all have a slightly different perspective and vibe. Made for music, this is a setting that bands love to play in.
