From the outside looking in, Las Vegas appears to be the ultimate grown-up playground, but only if you’re old enough to buy a ticket. Sure, the city’s biggest draws have a strict age limit, but there are still a few things you can do if you haven’t hit that magic number. Here are a few of the best attractions to hit up if you’re underage but still itching to explore Sin City.
This pool hall is open to everyone until midnight, then switches to an 18+ experience. The bar features 17 Olhausen pool tables and four bar box tables, and hosts weekly tournaments. Cue D’s has 8 and 9-ball tournaments every Sunday and the entry fee is $10 per player. Tournaments are on a handicapped system geared towards new and upcoming players of the game. Pool rates are $6/hour per player or $10 per table of up to five. For those who come with drinking-age friends, beers are $2 on weekends and Sake is buy-one-get-one-free on weekdays.
Location: 3400 S Jones Blvd., Las Vegas.
It’s not quite the same as hitting a blackjack table, but you can still challenge your friends to some serious competition at the Pinball Hall of Fame. It’s nothing but pinball machines for over 10,000 square feet and it’s open the public. More than 150 games are featured including some awesome themed pins, like the Twilight Zone, four different Star Trek machines, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Super Mario Bros. The best part? Admittance is free. Any excess money spent on games goes to non-denominational charities.
The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. For a full list of machines, click here.
Location: 1610 E. Tropicana, Las Vegas.
Poolside concerts at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino usually feature pretty big names, and you don’t have to be 21 to attend. This summer will see the Vans Warped Tour, Taking Back Sunday and the Turnpike Troubadors, among others, take the stage.
Attendees can reserve a cabana, dance by the stage or chill by the pool, and these events are open to almost all ages. For a slightly more grown-up experience, Hard Rock’s “The Joint” showroom also has events open for ages 18 and up, including Bassruch Massive, an Electric Daisy Carnival event which takes place on June 15th. Location: 4455 Paradise Rd, Las Vegas.
This teen nightclub is open every Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for ages 16 and up, and from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. for ages 18 and up. The venue comes complete with LED club lighting, lasers, fog machine, go-go cages, private VIP seating areas and a JBL sound system.
FroZEN is a drug and alcohol-free environment, and sure beats sitting alone in a hotel room while parents hit the town. The club hosts a different event each weekend and a full schedule can be found here. The dress code is “stylish club attire” and admission starts at $25.
Location: 4427 East Sunset Road, Henderson.
Arguably one of the best shows on the Strip (I’ve seen it three times), Absinthe is a great spot for those who aren’t quite 21, but don’t want to feel like they’re stuck at the Las Vegas kid’s table either. It’s raunchy, impressive and funny, presenting circus acts like you’ve never quite seen them.
If you want in on the action, book front-row seats. You’re sure to get heckled by the master of ceremonies but also get the best view for music acts, dancers, acrobats and more. The New York Times hit the nail on the head with their description: “Imagine Cirque du Soleil as channelled through ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ and painted by George Gros.” The show is done in the cabaret style and takes place inside an old-fashioned circus tent in front of Caesars Palace.
Location: 3570 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas.
In the heart of Chinatown is Q Karaoke and Bistro, a low-key restaurant and bar that rents machines and rooms by the hour to anyone over 18. All rooms are half price during happy hour, even if you aren’t drinking, and VIP spaces can hold up to 20 people. Songs are available in English, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish.
