There was a time when Las Vegas was known for gambling, lounge acts, and cheap buffets. Those days are long gone. For the most part, inexpensive eats and entertainment have been replaced with restaurants from some of the great chefs in the world and jaw dropping shows.
Generally, I’m not complaining. But sometimes my wallet does.
If your billfold is running a little light at the moment, fear not, Vegas still has some beauty bargains. All it takes is a little digging. Scratch that, all it takes is a little reading: here are the best bargains I know about in Sin City.
Las Vegas has always been home to the cheap steak meal. Mostly, the meat is lousy and the venues are undesirable, but Ellis Island is different. It’s offers a quality $8 steak dinner 24 hours a day. You have to jump through a couple hoops to get the deal – printing a couple of coupons at a kiosk and playing a slot machine at least once – but it comes with potatoes, green beans, and soup or salad, and is easily a $20-30 value.
It’s an off-the-strip joint (4178 Koval Lane) but it’s still easy to get to.
Located on the strip (adjacent to the Encore), Tacos El Gordo has $2.10 tacos almost any hour of the day. The tacos come with pork shaved straight from the rotating meat and are garnished with avocado. They’ll hit the spot, whether you want one or five. El Gordo also offers fabulous, greasy fries topped with steak meat. You won’t break the budget, but you may limit your hangover with a tasty treat before bed.
Entertainment tends to be pricey, but with a list price of $35 (and frequent deals for half that), the Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah’s is a hoot. Mac performs twice daily Tuesday through Saturday, and the act is legit. The late-night TV regular has been around forever and is uber audience friendly; ask for an autograph after the show and you’ll see what I mean. King’s show is great for kids and a bargain for anyone looking for a good time at an affordable price.
Down the street from where Mac King performs at Harrah’s is the Best Western Plus Casino Royale. Every day, all day, they have Michelob for $1. They actually have a lot of good deals, but grab your dollar Mich and laugh at everyone walking down the strip with their expensive cocktails.
Where else would the Pinball Hall of Fame be located? And guess what, admission is free! Bring your quarters and play all sorts of machines from the last century. Play all day if you want. It’s located right by UNLV, not far from the Hard Rock.
Located 15 minutes from Vegas in Henderson (which is worth a visit whether you want this deal or not), the Skyline Casino has shrimp cocktails available 24/7 for $1.49. There’s no filler; you’ll get a cocktail glass filled with shrimp and a pleasant sauce. If you don’t want to venture to Henderson, for the $2.99 version at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino is a tasty stand-in.
