Bread, cake, and pastries might not be on your mind all that often, but they would be if you were on a low-carb diet. As Joni Mitchell once sang, “you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone.” So next time you’re in Vegas, take some time to give baked goods the appreciation they deserve. They make the perfect morning or dessert treat, and there are many fantastic spots to get your favorite baked goods. These are some of my favorites.
Renowned for their baking, or maybe it is artistry, with wedding cakes, Freed’s has been cranking out a wide variety of treats for nearly 60 years. It’s not just the go-to spot for weddings; their challah is great, and the European buttercream is made from scratch. There is a good reason they are constantly getting exposure on TV and magazines, in addition to annually being chosen as the best bakery in the city: virtually nobody tries a bite and isn’t satisfied.
The versatility of this West Sahara Avenue location is what makes it special. In addition to scrumptious breads, cookies, and pies, they have a wonderful brunch and lunch menu that highlights what they do best. Whether it be sandwiches on fresh bread, french toast, a sandwich on a croissant, or salad with homemade croutons, everything tastes great and gives you the energy you need for the day.
German Bread Bakery has two locations in town and both have lots of good sweets, but you come for the bread. You can get rolls, pretzels, and more in at least ten varieties, like rye, six seed, sunflower, walnut, white, and raisin. Owned by a husband-wife team, their dedication to fresh quality ingredients shines through in everything they produce.
From the famed French Laundry chef Thomas Keller, Bouchon is a high-end restaurant located at the Venetian. Right next to Bouchon is Bouchon Bakery. Either go straight for the baked goods or focus on breakfast/brunch if you want a sit down experience. Review the pastry menu for croissants, danishes, muffins, sticky buns, beignets, and baguettes. Their sweets are rich and elegant, yet easy to scarf down. Try to take the time to enjoy them.
The Bellagio’s European-style pastry shop, conceived by Jean Philippe Maury, lures people with its 26-foot chocolate fountain. It keeps them satisfied with items that look more like art than food. Everything they do with chocolate is amazing. Have a special occasion coming up? They’ll whip up something unique just for you. They have a cake for every occasion.
