Subway calls their employees Sandwich Artists which is quite frankly an insult to both sandwiches and artists. Proper subs are irresistible goodness inside of artisan mastery, and Las Vegas has some can’t-miss spots. Between your beer chugging, cocktail-sipping, and steak eating, find a few minutes for one of these hoagies.
Substitute catfish for beef and you have a remade American classic. Rich Moonen took a dish his mom had been making for years – meat, onions, spices, and ketchup – and fancied it up at his RM Seafood at the Mandalay Bay. His take on the Sloppy Joe includes sauteed onions, bell peppers, and paprika. Wash it down with some memorable and rich clam chowder. Don’t forget your bib.
Tourists don’t normally venture over to South Decatur Blvd., but Pop’s Philly Steaks is the perfect remedy for your late-night hankerings. Open 24 hours, this is south Philly in west Vegas. Everything on the menu is good, but anything besides the Cheez Whiz is amateur hour. An authentic Philly cheesesteak is thinly sliced beef with onions and “wiz”. It’s greasy, delicious, and perfect after a long night, whether the evening has gone according to plan or not.
The Baguette Cafe, by the Center Point retail shops, is unassuming but scrumptious. Even on their own, their buttery, crispy, fresh croissants are a wonderful way to start the morning. Turning one into a breakfast sandwich will leave you sated for days. For lunch, their various paninis are both simple and imaginative with big flavors. Don’t be fooled by the look, this is not just a spot for coffee and reading the newspaper. The food is seriously special, and all the locals stopping in should prove the point.
There is something special about meat that melts in your mouth. New York-style pastrami from Zoozacrackers at the Wynn takes you from the desert to Manhattan. They make their meat in-house and, while this might not be the elegant high-end casino meal you dream of, the fat and smoke and spice hit the spot. A touch of mustard is all the pastrami and fresh rye needs to take your breath away.
Don’t pretend you’re not too good for a hot dog. If you try one from Pink’s, you might just fall in love. Originally “Hollywood Pink’s” in LA, this hot dog stand sits close to Planet Hollywood and has been serving celebs and night owls for over 70 years. The dogs are large and juicy. You can’t go wrong with a plain or polish dog, but I love it lathered in juicy chili with onions and mustard.
