The Las Vegas lifestyle might agree with the young and reckless – but the price tag usually doesn’t. Between gaming tables, fancy cocktails and eating out for every meal, a bill on a Sin City getaway can get expensive. One way for young people to save a buck is by staying in a youth hostel, an option that’s commonly forgotten about when travelling stateside. If that’s something you’re interested in – check out these top-rated places to stay on the cheap.
This is one of the oldest hostels in the city and has learned a few tricks of the trade in all its time near the strip. This is the most centrally located youth hostel in the city – within walking distance of the Fremont Street Experience, Stratosphere Casino and Las Vegas Premium Outlets. Rooms start at $21 and house a minimum of six people. Sin City Hostel also mirrors as a travel agency, hosting a ton of organized events based around what’s going on in the city. Their biggest weekends of the year include Electric Daisy Carnival and New Year’s Eve. It also leads tours to the south and west rims of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Zion & Bryce National Park.
It’s four miles from the strip, which is less-than-ideal for a group who wants to party in the heart of the city, but a stay at Hostel Cat makes up for it in price. Rooms start at $23 per night at this laid-back location, which offers free wifi, parking, a business center and air conditioning. Female-only or coed dorms are available, along with private rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms. Those used to living in the lap of luxury won’t seek out this hostel with its sparse accommodations, but those who regularly travel on the cheap will be thrilled with its kitchen, exercise area and movie room. The hostel also hosts a “Drink and Meet Travellers” event nightly. Hostel Cat is located on the edge of the Arts District and is a 15-minute walk from Stratosphere Casino.
Thunderbird doesn’t call itself a hostel, but its low price tag and young clientele qualifies it as one in our book. It’s the most expensive of the trio with rooms starting at $77 per night, but that’s still a steal in Las Vegas. The price is reflected in the amenities though, which are way less sparse than at the other two spots. Thunderbird rooms are outfitted with LED TVs, ironing boards, coffee makers, hair dryers and bath products. The hotel is closer to downtown than the strip, but is still only two miles away from places like the Venetian and Bellagio. While breakfast isn’t included in the price, there is a restaurant and lounge on site.
