A family that worked in the Mexican meat market business for years used to toy around at lunchtime markets, combining Korean dishes with Mexican flavors. It grew a grassroots following and they decided to open a restaurant. Success has been incredible. Your burrito options sound standard – meat, rice, onions, pico de gallo, cilantro, and -lettuce but the fusion twist and seasoning provides a unique and addicting flavor.
A few years back, the statistically driven fivethirtyeight.com set out to find the best burrito in the U.S. The winner was San Francisco’s La Taqueria. Los Tacos comes from the same family. Jay Gabriel Jara, who owns Los Tacos, is the son of La Taqueria owner Miguel Jara. The food is basically the same with one exception: the younger Jara prefers white beans to pintos. Besides that, you have carnitas, salsa, tomato, onion, and cilantro. And for convenience, they have a drive-thru.
By and large, avoiding chains is a good idea. However, Roberto’s is a local franchise, and their locations are so variable in size and ambiance that they feel like real holes-in-the-wall. Open 24 hours, Roberto’s burritos are probably greasier than you are used to, but that makes them all the better for a late-night stop. The wet burrito is a solid option if you aren’t in a hurry.
More in the southwest style, the key here is the green chile. The red is nothing to sneer at, either, and you can even mix the two sauces in a “Christmas” variety. Whether you are gnawing on a breakfast burrito or something later in the day, don’t stinge on the toppings. Just be ready for spicy and get plenty of napkins. Wash down your burrito with a house lager. Actually, make it two cervejas, por favor!
