Sure, Las Vegas may not technically qualify as the south, but it’s not technically in Ireland either and that didn’t stop the Strip from going all out on St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re in the mood for a little Mexican flavor and salt on your rim this Cinco de Mayo, check out one of these four ways (or should we say cuatro?) to get in the holiday spirit.
Cinco de Mayo is getting the royal treatment for the whole weekend at SLS Las Vegas. From May 5th-7th, four different SLS spots are offering specials and good times that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of Mexico City (okay, maybe not exactly).
The weather is forecasted to be a balmy 92 degrees on May 5th, so if you want to escape the heat, head over the the Foxtail pool. From 11 a.m. to close the pool will have two-for-one margaritas, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be $3 chicken or carne asada street tacos. If you’re really looking to go all out, a $500 cabana package gets you a 12-pack of Corona, a bottle of Gran Patrón Platinum and chips & salsa.
The Center Bar and Monkey Bar are also offering $20 five-bottle Mexican beer buckets, a margarita and beer pairing for $15, and $6 classic margaritas. The Northside Cafe and Chinese Kitchen will have $9.95 food specials and a $10 drink special with Mexican beer with a shot of Cazadores Reposado tequila. Finally, Umami burger, Beer Garden & Sports Book will have a Casa Burger and classic margarita for $14.95.
Location: 2535 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas.
For a Summerlin option, Pancho’s is taking it one step further than cheap tacos and hosting an all-day fiesta including mariachis, traditional food and tequila shot specials you won’t find on the Strip. If you’re looking to keep it casual, you don’t even have to step foot inside the restaurant with booths on the patio that will have $5 shots of Hornitos varieties and $9 shots of Patron.
If you need a little grease to soak up all the alcohol you drank on the street, head inside for specials on menu items like Camarones a la Diabla (sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions and Gualjillo chiles), the Chimichanga Especial (a deep-fried tortilla filled with pork, cheese and green chiles) or the Philly Burrito (flatiron steak, mushrooms and enchilada sauce).
The special cocktail for the holiday is the Jalapeño Margarita, made with Zarco Silver tequila, house-made margarita mix, triple sec, and topped with a sliced jalapeño. Mariachi bands will perform all day and country singer Siana King will start at 8 p.m.
Location: 11020 Lavender Hill Dr, Las Vegas.
For a family-friendly option, Hispanic newspaper El Tiempo is hosting a massive block party from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday. This celebration of Mexican culture and customs is likely to be the least offensive in the city and will include drinks, a food festival, live music, Hispanic performers and a kids area.
Entertainment will include the Roaming Mariachis trio; the Sin City Saleros, a salsa dancing group; Sengelistli Azteca; Voces Divinas de México; and Big Valley Pro Wrestling Lucha Libre – a Mexican wrestling act native to Las Vegas. While parents enjoy as many margaritas as they can carry, kids will be treated to games, face painting, crafts and more. Admission is free and a full schedule of events can be found here.
Location: Texas Station, 2101 Texas Star Lane, North Las Vegas.
An argument can be made that classy and American Cinco de Mayo celebrations don’t exactly go hand-in-hand, but if you want to break the mold head over to the Delano for a top-notch experience. They say you can’t put a price on class, but the Delano has slapped a $100 tag on a special holiday evening.
The night will start with a cocktail reception before moving on to a four-course meal at the Farmhouse Dinner restaurant. The farm-to-table theme is getting a little Mexican spice and presenting a menu that includes a chile relleno croquetta, octopus carpaccio, and Guajillo-rubbed pork shank. Before the night is over, guests will be treated to a Latin performance by Andy Vargas, the lead singer of Santana.
Location: 3940 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas.
