The 551st and final episode of American Idol will air Thursday night, and the only sure thing is that Jennifer Lopez – and four of the five remaining contestants – will be crying at the end.
Contestants in the previous episode sent Lopez scrambling for tissues with their personal stories and talent, so it’s a good bet that emotions will again run high in the swan song.
But showing emotion is only part of what the 46-year-old judge brings to the table. Lopez has been able to keep Father Time at bay and has been more than willing to show off the goods during her five-year Idol run with an array of stunning outfits, none more attention-getting than the retro 1970s striped jumpsuit she wore in the last show.
Lopez, of course, could look fetching in a hijab, so it will be interesting to see what she comes up with for the show’s final performance.
As for the final contestants, voters will be getting one final look at a gospel singer from Mississippi (Trent Harmon), a former Disney boy-band performer from Texas (Dalton Rapattoni), a call-representative from Mississippi (La’Porsha Renae), a Massachusetts native and child of Indian immigrants (Sonika Vaid), and a Louisiana native who was once voted off The Voice (Mackenzie Bourg).
This being the final show, expect plenty of flashbacks and nostalgia. (You don’t think you’ll get to sit through a few hours without having to deal with Simon Cowell again, do you?) Just don’t count on any fond reminiscences with former judge Mariah Carey, who would rather poke sharp icicles in both her eyes than endure another minute of Idol.
Besides feuding with co-judge Nicki Minaj, Carey apparently dreaded having to say bad (or even good) things about the contestants.
“It’s so boring and so fake, I’m sorry,” she was quoted as saying after season 14 when asked if she would return. “When I say it’s fake, I mean, I have to make up things to say about everybody. Half the time, the performances are good, you’ll just be like, ‘It was good.'”
All right then.
