While there are many things a man can do with his time, drinking beer and watching football are better than all of those things. They go hand in hand like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Both are great on their own, but together, they create pure magic.
But every now and again, we need to switch it up. For those times you’re craving something a little stiffer, cocktails are the answer. And you don’t need a degree in mixology to make a great concoction. These five easy game-day cocktails will keep you going through all four quarters.
1. Irish Lemonade
At first glance, mixing whiskey and lemonade looks like a match made in hell (and not the cool part of hell where Keith Richards is going). But we assure you it’s not. Pour 2 oz. of Jameson (or any other Irish Whiskey) into a glass with ice, then top it with lemonade. Voila, you have a triumph of simplicity that’s guaranteed to knock your socks off. Resist the urge to start Fightin’ Irish.
2. Apple Pie-Bourbon Sweet Tea
Apple Pie-Bourbon Sweet Tea has been a summer staple for years down in Dixie. Once this sweet tonic hits your lips, you’ll understand why. It tastes like apple pie for adults! (I guess, apple pie, itself, isn’t exclusively for kids, but you know what I’m saying.) Spicy bourbon goes well with fall weather, and even better with your pre-game ritual. We like this recipe by Auburn Style.
Pronounced ki-pi-reen-yah, this refreshing but potent Brazilian cocktail is gaining worldwide popularity. The main ingredient of a Caipirinha is cachaca, a clear distilled spirit made of sugar cane juice. (You can find it at most liquor stores.) It’s basically rum’s rowdy cousin. Making a Caipirinha is simple: muddle two lime wedges with a teaspoon of sugar. Then, add the cachaca and lots of ice. Bring on the blitz!
If you absolutely cannot live without a brew on game-day, give it a refreshing boost by turning it into a “beergarita.” Take some tequila, a can of frozen limeade, and ice, then blend’em all together for an instant party in a mug. No one can give you a hard time for sipping on a frozen drink when the first ingredient is beer. This recipe from Mrs. Schwartz’s Kitchen is so simple, anyone can make one.
5. Winter Julep
A frozen cocktail is not always ideal, especially in the middle of winter. Luckily, this “winter julep” recipe from We are not Martha is perfect for tailgating in the snow. It will warm you to the core regardless of whether or not your team is on fire. Most importantly, it can be stashed in a coffee mug and no one will be the wiser. Your taste buds will be screaming touchdown!
