Game of Thrones took home the most coveted Emmy last year, Outstanding Drama Series, bucking the trend of fantasy shows being overlooked. This year, the sexy-violent Westerosi are back for more!
Thrones received a leading 23 nominations this year. In fact HBO got a whopping 94 nominations in total, but that’s considered an off-year given that they had 126 nods last time.
Fox offshoot FX scored 56 nominations, with 22 of those nods for the acclaimed miniseries The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story as well as 18 for the second season of Fargo.
Netflix continues its meteoric ascent this year, increasing from 34 noms to 54. Back in 2013, the streaming giant was happy to have 14 nominations. It just goes to show you that their investment ($5 billion) into original programming is starting to pay dividends.
The big losers were the big networks like ABC, CBS, and FOX who all saw their nomination totals fall, while NBC’s tally stayed the same. We are definitely seeing a paradigm shift as these networks have failed to create original programming that brings eyeballs to the little screen.
Like every year, people are going to talk about the Emmy snubs. How does an award show like this get so many things right and so many things wrong at the same time?
What did Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan do or say to the powers that be to get no prison love this year? American Horror Story: Hotel can get nominated for Golden Globes but apparently not an Emmy. No Christian Slater for Mr. Robot? Oh and dear Emmys, there is this show called Outlander on Starz that you continue to snub. Shame on you. Anyway, I digress.
Below are the shows and performers who did get nominated, and the odds that they will pick up an statue. We only listed the major categories because nobody cares about Interactive Media Programming nominations or who wins for Lighting Design. Nerds!
