Welcome to this week’s edition of the Entertainment Odds Medley — a completely biased take on the week’s biggest pop-culture stories, told through numbers, odds, and props because this is Vegas after all.
Here I’ll fill you in on (my version of) the best and worst from all of your (my) favorite celebrities, musicians, and even politicians, plus a few stories that are just begging to be shared. This is the stuff the group chat will thank you for. Or, at the very least, not kick you out for.
After a couple weeks off, we are back at it — if “it” is spending hours scouring the internet for hot gossip, and entering lively debates about who the greatest female athlete of all-time is. (Hint: She got married this week and her now-husband owns an entire corner of the internet.) Did you miss us? Well, the feeling is mutual!
This week, we’ve got a bit of scandal for you, some pretty serious accusations, and a lot of disagreement surrounding who the sexiest man alive is — or more accurately, who it is not. There is also a lot to celebrate, thank-the-heavens, with one singer scoring a major win at the American Music Awards, plus a wedding fit for a queen.
In a statement released early Sunday morning, Zinzi Clemmons called for “women of color — black women in particular — to divest from Lena Dunham,” and has decided to lead by example. Clemmons publicly stepped down from her position as a writer at Lenny Letter, a weekly online newsletter founded by Dunham and GIRLS co-creator Jenni Konner. In a detailed social-media post, the author explained the reasons for her decision, citing “hipster racism” and Dunham’s response to sexual harassment claims filed against a former coworker on GIRLS.
Earlier in the week, actress Aurora Perrineau accused Murray Miller, former writer on the Dunham/Konner produced GIRLS, of sexual harassment. Dunham and Konner quickly responded to the allegation, stating that they stood with Miller and believed he was innocent — an affirmation that drew immediate backlash. For these two, the declaration of support for the accused came off as hypocritical; Dunham and Konner are both outspokenly feminist, and have both demanded — on multiple occasions — that society change the way it hears the stories of victims.
For Clemmons, hearing Perrineau’s account, and seeing Dunham’s response, was not only frustrating, it was emotional. According to Clemmons, she and Dunham have known one another since college, which is where one of Clemmons’ friends was sexually assaulted by one of Dunham’s. Back then, they felt powerless to do anything; now, Clemmons clearly does not.
As for the “hipster racism” (explained by Clemmons as the kind of racism that claims, “It’s just a joke!”), this is not the first time Dunham has been accused. Accusations of this sort have followed Dunham her entire career.
The writer and actress has issued an apology for her response to Perrineau’s accusations, though at the time of writing, no response has been made to Clemmons’ accusations.
Odds Lena Dunham issues a response statement to Zinzi Clemmons: 2/3
Dunham has historically been quick to apologize when she is called out for over-stepping, over-speaking, or being otherwise insensitive to an issue. She has built her career off the idea of transparency; not responding would be out of character.
Odds Zinzi Clemmons starts her own weekly e-newsletter: 4/1
Ms. Clemmons is an accomplished writer who wants to ensure that women of color are heard. I would not be surprised if she were to use her own success to create a platform for others. I am not convinced she will model that platform in the exact styling of her now-former workplace, but it would be fitting retribution to take a bite out of their market share.
Unfortunately, the singer was not in attendance for the award ceremony and could not get “one of those photos…trynna hold 7 AMAs like a G” (his words, not mine), so an impassioned video-call from the back of his tour van had to suffice. Touring in Brazil, Mars thanked the AMAs and the “hooligans” for his success, before promising us all that he would be back jamming with us shortly.
Well, no hard feelings from this gal. I’ll just be over here, warming up my voice until then.
Odds Bruno Mars wins Album of the Year at the 2018 Grammys: 1/2
If this last week is any indication, the man is on fire! There are some really amazing albums out there to challenge his win, however Bruno Mars has momentum behind him. Plus, have you heard his album?
O/U nominations for Bruno Mars at the 2018 Grammys: 5
This year, in a particularly polarizing decision, the coveted title went to Blake Shelton. It’s not a place we thought the sexiness committee would land, but it’s also not the craziest idea — right?
Wrong, it seems. The morning after Shelton’s title was announced, shock and awe began to roll in waves across social media platforms. That’s not to say Shelton doesn’t have his fans, God bless their souls. He definitely does. But do a quick search of #BlakeShelton and you’ll soon see that the general consensus ranged somewhere between resigned acceptance and general confusion:
“Blake Shelton is, at best, the sexiest divorced dad at this barbeque.” (@DanaSchwartzzz)
“Blake Shelton was named sexiest man alive? My condolences, I didn’t realize so many men had passed away last night. #BlakeShelton” (@Nrossbsb1).
“‘#BlakeShelton is an interesting way to misspell #IdrisElba.’ – Earth” (@KasiaLarysa)
Though, as comedian Martha Kelly pointed out:
“It’s not like Blake Shelton voted himself Sexiest Man Alive. He should release a statement telling us all to go to hell.” (@MarthaKelly3)
Thankfully, the Voice judge appears to have a good sense of humor about the public’s reaction, posting a video of himself reading mean tweets to his Twitter page, with the caption: “Thank y’all for the supportive words! #Don’tHateMeBecauseImBeautiful.”
The divisive title apparently took some convincing for Shelton to actually accept, but after a bit of encouragement from girlfriend Gwen Stefani, the country singer said that if “[he] can be sexy for a year, [he’s] taking it!” Who could blame the fella?
Odds Idris Elba is named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2018: 2/5
These are high short, admittedly, but look at the man.
Odds Blake Shelton is ever re-named Sexiest Man Alive: 1o0/1
It’s been great publicity for People, in the “all publicity is good publicity” way. But I have a feeling they’ll be looking elsewhere — and rightfully so. Idris is still out there.
Despite several denied travel visas, last-minute changes in musical guests, and a stumble or two, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (VSFS) has officially been walked. Held in Shanghai this year, the lingerie show made even more headlines than usual when it was reported on November 16th that a number of models would not be able to walk in the show. Gigi Hadid, Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova, among others, were denied the necessary visas to travel to China, causing some major last-minute changes. The following day, it was revealed that musical guest Katy Perry had also been banned from the nation — possibly for political reasons — effectively cancelling her performance for the night.
The show managed to go on despite the gathering storm, and other than one big tumble by model Ming Xi (who recovered with grace and a huge smile), the rains held off.
Odds Ming Xi walks in the next VSFS: 2/1
The way she recovered from her fall showed the utmost grace and good humor. I hope to see her wearing wings again.
Odds the VSFS is held in China again: 75/1
The headache couldn’t have been worth it for event planners. There are so many other interesting and beautiful places in the world; going back to a country with such restricted access is a longshot — that is, unless policies happen to change.
When the two met in 2015 in Rome, she had never heard of Reddit and he had never watched her play tennis. Their first date was just before the 2015 French Open; Ohanian came to see Williams play and then the two spent six hours walking around Paris. According to Ohanian, it wasn’t even a year later that he knew he wanted to marry the tennis champ.
“I felt like a door had been opened to a person who made me want to be my best self,” Ohanaian told Vanity Fair.
Williams posted her first photo of the two alone together in November 2016, and by mid-December, the two were engaged. In January 2017, Williams played in, and won, the Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant. On September 1, 2017, the couple welcomed their daughter, Alexis Ohanian, Jr., and he was the only one who remotely rivaled Serena’s thunder at the wedding, which is saying a lot, considering the star-studded guest list included the likes of Kelly Rowland, Kim Kardashian West, and Beyonce.
Odds Alexis Ohanian, Jr. becomes a professional tennis player: 12/1
I’m sure a bit of pressure will be there, not necessarily from mom and dad, but just in a general sense. While sports will undoubtedly be a large presence in the Ohanian-Williams home, I wouldn’t hold my breath for Alexis Jr. to take the court.
Odds Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian get divorced by 2020: 20/1
You shut your dirty mouth.
