Hollywood loves sequels, and The Fast and the Furious saga has been proof that, if it ain’t broke, you shouldn’t fix it. With Furious 7 grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide, it was only a matter of time until Universal announced another installment of the wildly successful franchise. According to Vin Diesel, fans can expect Furious 8 in theaters come April 2017.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the much anticipated film, including some production issues behind the scenes. This is what we know about the eighth movie in the Furious franchise so far, followed by the odds on the latest rumors.
End of the Furious Franchise
Furious 8 will mark the beginning of the end for the franchise. Diesel has confirmed that the eighth movie will be the first of the final trilogy, meaning, when it’s all said and done, there will be ten films in the series. (Eat your heart out, Harry Potter.) He has also referred to the project as “Fast 8” on numerous occasions, which suggests that could be the official name of the film, though IMDB already has an entry for “Furious 8,” so that’s what we’re going with for present purposes.
Furious 8 Still Needs a Director
Diesel released a statement online telling fans that Furious 8 is still searching for a director. James Wan and Justin Lin have both turned down the gig, so the hunt is on for a new director.
There May Be a Location Change (L.A. to New York)
The Furious franchise may be moving to the East Coast. According to Diesel, the crew may shift gears and take the battle to the streets of New York. The series has yet to crash land in The Big Apple, so this will be uncharted territory.
The Return of Lucas Black
Furious 7 saw the brief return of Lucas Black’s character Sean Boswell from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Black has reportedly been contracted for a total of three films, which means he may have been tasked with filling the gap left by the tragic departure of Paul Walker. It makes sense for the writers to bring Boswell back into the fold, as his friend Han was killed off in Furious 7. A revenge story ties in nicely with the existing plot.
Furious 8 Odds:
What will the next movie in the Furious franchise be called?
Which actors will reprise their roles in the next movie?
Over/under on worldwide box office: $1.3 billion
