Emma Stone topped Forbes’ 2017 list of the world’s highest-paid actresses for the first time in her career, dethroning Jennifer Lawrence. The La La Land star raked in $26 million over a 12-month period (June 2016 to June 2017).
Jennifer Aniston placed second despite having a quiet year on the silver screen, taking home a cool $25.5 million. She was involved in works like Office Christmas Party, but her income mostly came from her endorsements with Emirates airlines, SmartWater and Aveeno.
In third is the former box-office queen, Jennifer Lawrence. Without a Hunger Games flick to boost her numbers, the 27-year-old relied mostly on her lucrative Dior deal.
The big earners of yesteryear, like Angelina Jolie and Sandra Bullock, are taking a backseat to the new generation of superstar actresses. The likes of Lawrence, Stone, Emma Watson, and Kristen Stewart are having their moment and it looks like they’re here to stay.
Can J-Law reclaim the top spot next year? Will the list be more diverse in 2018? And will the women finally start earning as much as the men? Here are the odds!
Jennifer Lawrence: 1/1
Jennifer Aniston: 3/1
Emma Watson: 9/1
Scarlett Johansson: 19/1
Emma Stone: 25/1
Julia Roberts: 40/1
After topping the list in 2015 and 2016, Jennifer Lawrence looks set to claw her way back to the top in 2018. The Hunger Games star will be riding high after she cashes her check for the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which should propel her straight back to the number one spot on the list.
L-Law’s fiercest competition will likely come from another Jennifer, Jennifer Aniston (J-Anis?) will still be pulling in the big bucks from all her aforementioned promotions, not to mention the royalties that keep pouring in from Friends.
Emma Watson was the reason for Beauty and the Beast’s box-office success, and she was rewarded handsomely for it. The Harry Potter star doesn’t have much lined up for next year but something will definitely come along.
Scarlett Johansson features in the next Wes Anderson film, Isle of Dogs, which should be a mild hit. Oh, and also Avengers: Infinity War, which might do pretty ok.
The Forbes top-ten list didn’t feature a single actress of color. Hopefully the list will be a little more diverse next year, but there aren’t too many scheduled blockbusters starring non-white actresses. Viola Davis (Fences, Suicide Squad) might be the best bet.
Forbes intends to release its list of highest-paid actors next week, but we already know what to expect. Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Robert Downey Jr., Vin Diesel, and Chris Pratt are all expected to out-earn Stone.
Jennifer Lawrence (27), Emma Watson (27), and Emma Stone (28) are the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood right now, and also the biggest draws for new advertising campaigns. That makes them front-runners for the top spot next year. If it’s going to be someone from the 30-plus crowd — like Aniston — it’ll be due to past endeavors and existing contracts. Count on the highest-earner of 2018 being a young’un.
