Memorial Day is usually a cash-fest for Hollywood, and the weekend box-office numbers can give us a pretty good idea of what will be hot in the summer months. If last weekend’s numbers are any indication of things to come, then there’s reason for producers and studios to be concerned.
Domestic earnings over the four-day weekend totaled a meek $172.3 million, making it the worst year since 1999. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Pirates 5) and Baywatch both debuted over the holiday weekend, both to underwhelming results.
Pirates 5 managed to finish on top and was by far the best performer, taking in $77 million over the four-day weekend. Though that is still the lowest debut of the franchise sequels.
Usually safe for a big payday at the box-office, not even a shirtless Dwayne Johnson could resuscitate a washed-up Baywatch. The R-rated reboot, which was met with scathing reviews in pre-release, pulled in a measly $23 million over the weekend, far lower than initial projections.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still holding strong, pulling in $25 million over the long weekend. Meanwhile, Alien: Covenant is rapidly losing ground, raking in just $13 million (down from a whopping $36 million last weekend).
Will the Pirates franchise finally be forced to walk the plank? Will Baywatch make it back to shore? Let’s take a look at the numbers to lead the summer box-office when it’s all said and done.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: 1/1
Transformers: The Last Knight: 13/7
Spider-Man: Homecoming: 19/1
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: 50/1
Despicable Me 3: 150/1
Alien: Covenant: 200/1
Of the summer flicks already released, there’s really nothing that can compete with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Just look at the numbers so far. However, the upcoming Transformers will definitely give Guardians a run for top spot. The latest Spider-man has a lot of potential as well. Tom Holland, who was cast as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, picks up where the Marvel blockbuster left off.
Pirates 5 may not be pulling the same numbers as the previous installments, but it’s still raking in a mean profit. For better or worse, Johnny Depp is inextricably tied to the Jack Sparrow character. So the future of the franchise is ultimately up to him.
We may be nearing the end for Old Captain Sparrow, but I think he’s still got a few adventures left in him. Disney will certainly make it worth his while.
It’s only downhill from here. Baywatch has an estimated budget of $69 million and so far it’s only made $27.6 million. It’s possible it reaches the black, but pretty unlikely. A poor opening week and terrible reviews aren’t exactly a winning recipe.
