A lot of people think Las Vegas is more homogeneous than it actually is. Truth be told, you can vacation in Vegas over and over again and never have the same experience. But there is one common thread that underpins almost everything you can do in Sin City; no matter what you plan for your Vegas weekend, you can probably drink while you do it.
If you’re in the mood to make the tippling the focal point of your evening, then try these quality watering holes on for size.
Not far from the Palace Station and a couple miles away from the Stratosphere on West Sahara Avenue, Herbs & Rye is a true gem for the drinking connoisseur. The menu, the drink selection, the decor, the service: it is all excellent. The drink menu is divided up by era. Try a stiff drink from the Gothic Age, a melange from the Golden Age, or a classic from the Old School Age. You can also get creative with the Prohibition drinks or skew modern with the Years of Reform options. Since this is Vegas, there’s also a section devoted to the Rat Pack Era. You can’t go wrong, whatever you choose, as long as you don’t choose to drive home.
Atomic Liquors is a bar and liquor store that’s been around for over 60 years. It’s a bit out of the way on Fremont Street, but it’s well worth the trip. With frequent events and great outdoor seating, it’s ideal for an evening out. Even if you aren’t there for a special occasion, they have serious drinks. The first free standing bar in the city, Atomic has a great beer selection. What really sets it apart is the barrel drinks; they take ingredients, put them into large white American Oak barrels, and let them age for two to four months. The result is rich beverages like Remember the Maine (made with rye, cherry brandy, sweet vermouth, and bitters) and Vieux Carre (made with rye, cognac, sweet vermouth, benedictine, and bitters).
Among the arts district on South Main Street sits a craft cocktail and beer bar with an ever changing menu. A winner of many awards for best cocktails in the city, the options are always exotic: asparagus dry vermouth, or bourbon and ginger beer, or pisco, plum liqueur, umeshu, plum vinegar, lime and pineapple. Leave your judgment in the taxi and try the different concepts on the menu. You won’t regret it.
If you are going to do your serious drinking at a casino, head to The Cosmopolitan. You can get hand-crafted cocktails at a lot of the spots on the property, but the Talon Club is the best. Not only does it offer a large selection at reasonable prices, it also has high-end options that set it apart. It was actually the first place in the country to offer The Balvenie 50-year-old, one of the most rare single malt scotch whiskies ever released.
