When Daniel Craig came along, Bond fans everywhere rejoiced. There was a fear that, after Pierce Brosnan left, there would be a series of unfulfilling one-film stands. But Craig worked out. Sure, he was a little darker and grittier than what fans were used to, but most liked that.
Last year, Craig stated that he would rather slash his wrists than continue playing James Bond, and the panic set in again.
Craig’s steely, morose Bond gave the character some much-welcomed depth that was lacking in previous incarnations of the world’s most famous spy. The great Bonds of the past — Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Connery — were all iconic in their time. But by today’s standards, their incarnations would be considered way too campy. Daniel Craig’s Bond was a necessary adjustment.
So who will carry on the legacy after Craig steps away?
Aidan Turner is the most likely answer. The Irish actor was recently endorsed by Brosnan, a fellow Irishman. Turner is best known for his role as Ross Poldark, an 18th century smuggler, in the BBC series The Poldark Novels. He also starred as Kili in The Hobbit trilogy.
Another top pick is Tom Hardy. Hardy already has experience bringing an iconic character back to life, playing Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. He also has on-screen spy experience from his turn as field agent Ricki Tarr in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Towards the long-shot end of the spectrum, you have Jack Huston, who starred in the recent trainwreck that was the Ben Hur remake, and the preppy James Norton of Happy Valley fame.
But the most interesting candidate is Idris Elba, who has played roles ranging from Stringer Bell on the HBO crime series The Wire to Chief Bogo in Zootopia. If the producers are looking to shake this up, he’s definitely the one to do it.
Of course, there are other options being considered, but these five are the frontrunners. In all likelihood, it will be Aidan Turner. He’s received the blessings of one of the most beloved Bonds and he fits the 007 mold pretty well.
Aidan Turner: 5/2
Tom Hardy: 11/5
Jack Husston: 10/3
James Norton: 10/3
Idris Elba: 6/1
