The 2016 Miss America pageant – not to be confused with the Trump-owned Miss USA – will take place in Atlantic City on September 13, 2015.
Nucky Thompson might not be in attendance, but guess who will be: good-looking representatives from all 50 states, plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands … and Delaware. (Don’t even act like you’re a real state, Delaware.)
Last year, the hype leading up to the pageant centered on Miss Kansas (aka Theresa Vail), not because she was a shoe-in (or even likely) to win, but because she was the first contestant ever to have visible tattoos. (Seriously!) While that might not seem terribly controversial in this day and age, remember that Miss America is surprisingly prudish for a beauty pageant featuring a swimsuit portion.
This year, the pre-pageant focus is on the fact that Miss New York has won the crown three years in a row! It’s extremely rare for one state to win back-to-back titles (Miss Oklahoma won in 2006 and 2007 but, before that, you have to go back to Miss Massachusetts in 1959 and 1960). A three-peat was previously unheard of.
So is there any chance that we see Miss New York crowned for a fourth straight year?
If the contestants were graded state-anonymously, for sure. Jamie Lynn Macchia – New York’s 2016 entrant – is an accomplished pageant vet who’d have just as good a shot as anyone if this were any other year.
But with New York winning the title three straight years, there is simply no way that the judges are going to give her a fair shake. Just think of what the front page of the Washington Post would say the next day?
Did I say front page? I mean H19.
Odds Miss New York wins Miss America for the fourth straight year: 150/1
