I was shocked last week when I Googled Natalie Portman and realized she’s only 35 years old. It feels like she’s been around forever. I’m almost prepared to give her a lifetime achievement award.
When I say it feels like she’s been around forever, that’s definitely not a complaint. I can’t get enough and, given her Oscar nomination for Jackie (her third Oscar nom), that seems like a common sentiment.
Natalie feels like a Hollywood elder because she started so young, starring in Leon: The Professional when she was just 13. She followed that with smaller roles in Heat, Everyone Says I Love You, and Mars Attacks! Her performance in 1996’s Beautiful Girls really put her on the map.
Countless other classics followed for the Harvard grad, like Closer, Black Swan, and Your Highness. (Ok maybe I could have done without Your Highness.) And if you look at her filmography, you’ll see an impressive range. Not only has she starred in big-budget hits like Thor and Star Wars, she has done a lot of art-house type films. Over her career, she has taken on challenging roles that have showcased her full array of acting talents. For my money, her ability to carry any genre of film is unmatched by any of her contemporaries.
It was that notion which got me thinking: who else could I see in the roles made famous by Natalie? That, in turn, got me thinking: what are the chances that any of her movies get remade or get a sequel?? Some cursory research showed me that a Leon sequel is already rumored. But it doesn’t stop there. Below are the odds on the top-five Natalie Portman movies that could one day be expanded upon, from most likely to least likely. (For the record, I’m not including Star Wars.)
There has been a lot of talk about a sequel to Natalie Portman’s debut film. Director Luc Besson wrote the sequel’s screenplay years ago and was just waiting for the right time to do it. However, when Besson left Gaumont Film Company to start his own studio (EuropaCorp), that angered the powers-that-be at Gaumont who own the rights to the film. It will be interesting to see if cooler heads prevail and a deal is struck to get the green light to see Portman as a lethal hit woman.
The 1995 classic directed by Michael Mann is apparently going to get a prequel. Mann told Deadline that he is looking to expand the noirish L.A. crime world that he made popular in Heat. There are also plans to write books and a TV project. Natalie Portman was very young when she played the minor role of Lauren Gustafson. If they are doing a prequel, she won’t be in it. But it gets included on the list as it’s highly likely we will see another Heat film.
“Remember, remember, the 4th of November.” Remember Natalie Portman as Evey and Hugo Weaving as the Guy Fawkes-mask wearing V? Back in 2005, V for Vendetta came to the big screen and became an instant classic. Written by the Wachowskis (Matrix Trilogy) and based on the DC/Vertigo graphic novel, there has been a movement to continue the V Universe on the big screen. Although director James McTeigue and the Wachowskis aren’t believed to be a part of any sequel, Warner Brothers have apparently had plans for doing another V film with both Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale rumored to be attached. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Could there be a Black Swan sequel? Should it include Natalie Portman, who won an Academy Award for her performance? Many people feel the ending to the ballet/horror flick left the door open for a sequel. Director Darren Aronofsky is not a fan of sequels, though, so it’s highly unlikely he’d want to be in on it. There is always an outside chance that another director could come on and continue the story.
Tim Burton’s dark comedy, science fiction film came out in 1996. (That’s over 20 years ago! Yipes.) The movie had a huge ensemble cast that included a young Natalie Portman as Taffy Dale. There have been rumors about a possible sequel but most of that buzz comes from how successful the Topps trading cards have been. The film has a cult following and still stands the test of time 20 years later. If money can be made, a sequel is a strong possibility. There has been a movement for Burton to actually do a completely different film but in the same B-movie vein called Dinosaurs Attack! based on the violent, early 1980s trading cards.
