Netflix may have been met with jeers at the Cannes Film Festival, but the streaming service has already made its mark on the film industry and they’re here to stay.
This year, Netflix made a splash at Sundance and Amazon claimed its first BAFTA, but the real sign of the times was the streaming services performance at the Academy Awards. Both companies have solidified their position in the film industry after picking up an Oscar.
Netflix took Best Documentary Short for The White Helmets, and Amazon claimed Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay for Manchester By the Sea as well as Best Foreign Language Film for The Salesman.
That’s only a taste of what’s to come. As companies like Netflix and Amazon continue to grow, we can be sure they’ll have an even bigger impact on the film industry in the very near future. How big will they get and how soon will it happen? Here are the numbers!
Chris Pratt: 4/1
Jennifer Lawrence: 5/1
Dwayne Johnson: 17/3
Johnny Depp: 22/3
Emma Watson: 9/1
Ben Affleck: 15/1
Matthew McConaughey: 19/1
Netflix has pulled in some huge names this year. Brad Pitt stars in War Machine, and Will Smith is the lead in the upcoming fantasy film Bright. Amazon took a gamble with Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, and they were rewarded in the form of two Oscars (and six nominations).
It’s only a matter of time until streaming services start competing directly with the major studios for A-list actors and actresses.
Amazon Studios: 3/1
Amazon’s Manchester by the Sea received a nomination for Best Picture, but the award was always going to go to either La La Land or Moonlight. Still, after just two years of original programming, the tech company was able to seal a nomination for the most coveted award in film.
Netflix has received seven Oscar nominations over the years, but they’ve all been in the documentary categories. It’s only a matter of time until they start producing Best Picture-worthy films, but the company is not quite there yet.
Original content isn’t really Hulu’s forte. Instead, the streaming service focuses on running programming from other networks. But given how successful Netflix and Amazon have been this year, Hulu may consider throwing its hat in the ring.
So far, its focus has been on television series rather than movies, so it would be a pretty big leap.
