The MTV Video Music Awards are back with a few twists. Most notably, the VMAs are doing without gender-specific awards this year. Instead of Best Female Artist and Best Male Artist, there’s just Artist of the Year. Also, to account for the chaotic times we live in, there’s a Best Fight Against the System category, which seems ground-breaking until you realize it’s really just a repackaging of the Best Video With a Social Message category.
The event takes place at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, on August 27th. Katy Perry, who stands to win five awards, has been tapped to host.
Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations with eight nods, including a shot at the two marquee categories: Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. He’s the favorite for both and is also in the running for Best Hip Hop Video, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Choreography!
In the Video of the Year category, Kendrick faces competition from Bruno Mars and Alessia Cara, but he’s the clear favorite to take home the big prize. Same goes for Artist of the Year, where Ed Sheeran may give him a run for his money. Lamar will have to win every award he’s nominated for if he’s going to equal Beyonce’s eight awards from last year.
For the Best Fight Against the System category, it’s hard to look past The Hamilton Mixtape, based on the wildly popular Broadway musical. However, North Dakota Access Pipeline protest song Stand Up / Stand N Rock shouldn’t be ignored.
Voting is now open, so go ahead and have your say. But first, check out the odds!
