One thing to note about the American Music Awards is that it is voted for online by the public. This means that voters tend to skew younger and the metaphorical ballot box can be stuffed. As a result, artists with a lot of younger fans — Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Alessia Cara — have a huge advantage in the AMAs compared to some other awards. So be sure to keep that in mind when watching, or betting on, the AMAs (November 20, 2016).
With a whopping 13 nominations, Drake has the chance to sweep up the AMAs like never before. The AMAs haven’t been too friendly towards him in the past, though. He’s been nominated nine times prior but hasn’t won once.
He’s also got some stiff competition this year. For Artist of the year, he will be up against Justin Bieber, whose new album Purpose evinces a maturation in both sound and character for the 22-year-old. There’s also Beyonce, whose latest album Lemonade was widely loved across the country.
And let’s not forget about Adele, who skyrocketed her way to number one with her latest album 25, or Rihanna and the song no one can get out of their head — “Work”.
New Artist of the Year will be a showdown between Alessia Cara and The Chainsmokers. Commercially, The Chainsmokers have Alessia Cara beat. But this isn’t about who is most liked, it’s about who is most loved. And something tells me that Alessia Cara fans are more likely to log-in and vote than Chainsmokers fans.
Best Hip Hop Artist is more or less Drake’s for the taking. Fetty Wap made his mark with “Trap Queen,” but it pales in comparison to the year Drake has had. And Future’s most memorable songs this year have been collaborations with Drake.
But don’t just tune into the AMAs to see who wins the hardware. The live performances are arguably the best part of the show. This year, we’ll be treated to performances by Lady Gaga, Green Day, and Bruno Mars, as well as a collaboration between Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.
Oh, and Sting is also scheduled to perform. Save your bathroom break accordingly.
