Who would you take in a fight, like a real, honest-to-god, no-holds-barred fight: Adele or Justin Bieber? Biebs has been beefing up his boyish bod, but Adele’s past is nothing but heartache. Does she even feel pain these days?
Thankfully, the two titans of pop music aren’t going to be duking it out anytime soon, at least not physically. Their albums are going tete-a-tete (cover-a-cover?) in 2016, however. Bieber’s Purpose and Adele’s 25 are going to be two of the biggest releases of the year. Both are going to produce their share of Billboard no. 1 singles. (Bieber already has two: “Sorry” and “Love Yourself”; Adele reached the pinnacle in January with “Hello”.)
They’re not the only artists with a chance for multiple no. 1s, though. A huge crop of uber-popular artists are putting out albums in 2016.
Crazy-ass Kanye is back with The Life of Pablo.
Rihanna will be a contender with her new album, Anti. [Her single “work” ft. Drake was no. 1 for nine weeks.]
Beyonce might be dropping something as soon as April. [In case you missed it, Lemonade came out on April 23 and is getting rave reviews.]
And the Red Hot Chili Peppers are releasing their first record in five years. I’m With You (2011) didn’t fare so well in terms of singles, but 2006’s Stadium Arcadium put in a solid performance. Could we see a resurgence from the Cali rockers?
I haven’t even gotten to Zayn yet. The onetime One Directioner found himself at no. 1 with “Pillow Talk” earlier this year (off his debut solo offering Mind of Mine). Are there other hits on the album? Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? No. He has a legion of fans who will eat up any single and ask for seconds.[Last but not least, Radiohead are finally hitting us with their new, still-untitled album. The timeless Brit rockers have never had a lot of Billboard success – “Creep” is their highest-charting single, which peaked at no. 34 circa 1993 – but we’ve already heard “Burn the Witch” off the new album; it’s a super-catchy tune that could have mass appeal while still pleasing the ‘Head’s legions of devoted fans.]
