The world has spoken. David Beckham has been named PEOPLE Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2015. The title, which sets the annual benchmark for male attractiveness, has been awarded to some of Hollywood’s most charming men in the last few decades including Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt.
So how does PEOPLE Magazine choose the winner? According to PEOPLE, men age like fine wine. You won’t find any teen heartthrobs on this list, as the median age of past winners is around 39. The youngest ever winner of the annual feature was a 27-year-old John F. Kennedy Jr. Sean Connery was the oldest to win at 59.
Another determining factor is profession. Nearly all the past winners have been movie or television actors (roughly nine out of every ten). Adam Levine (musician), John F. Kennedy Jr. (politician), and David Beckham (athlete) are the only non-actors to date to claim the honor.
Finally, the last and most important characteristic of PEOPLE’s “Sexiest Man Alive” is the buzz factor. PEOPLE is, foremost, a publicity machine, so any potential candidate has to have the star power to sell magazines. If you look at the list of past winners, each and every one has a dedicated fan base. In other words, the nominee has to be a celebrity to win the award. Hollywood is a fickle child, so it pays to be current. It also helps if the candidate happens to have an upcoming project coming out around the time of publication.
So which of today’s leading men will be named PEOPLE Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2016? We offer up our short list of eligible men, along with odds to boot.
Chris Evans: 4/1
Chris Evans will be starring in one of the biggest films of 2016: Captain America: Civil War. He’s the right age (34), and he has over 2.9 million followers on Twitter. He wouldn’t be the first superhero to win the title. Thor actor Chris Hemsworth won back in 2014, as did Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, and George Clooney (twice). Many feel as though Evans was snubbed in previous years, so 2016 could be his time to shine.
Leonardo DiCaprio: 5/1
It’s hard to believe that 41-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to be named “Sexiest Man Alive.” Leo is unquestionably handsome and very popular with the ladies (just look at his dating history). He’s also been getting lots of Oscar buzz for his performance in The Revenant, which means all eyes will be on him come awards season. This man always knows how to draw a crowd.
Benedict Cumberbatch: 7/1
Benedict Cumberbatch (39) has already claimed the “sexiest” crown in his native England, so it’s not a stretch to say that this British heartthrob is also a contender in North America. The Sherlock actor is set to star in Marvel’s latest cash cow Doctor Strange in 2016. Let’s not forget he has a legion of female fans (known as “Cumberb*tches”) at his disposal.
Chris Pratt: 9/1
Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt (36) has been on a roll as of late. After dropping nearly 65 pounds, Pratt went from husky to hunky seemingly overnight. He’s also starred in some of biggest movies in the past two years: Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Next year, Pratt will be appearing in The Magnificent Seven alongside Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Being named “Sexiest Man Alive” would just be the icing on the cake.
Michael Fassbender: 12/1
Michael Fassbender is another top contender for “Sexiest Man Alive.” This Oscar-nominated, German-Irish actor has seen nothing but mainstream success since starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. Fassbender will be busy in 2016 appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse, Assassin’s Creed, and The Light Between Oceans. You can pretty much guarantee that he’ll be getting plenty of press.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: 14/1
What’s not to love about Dwayne Johnson? The WWE-wrestler-turned-action-star has brought in over $2 billion in box office revenue. He is also universally loved by fans for his down-to-earth personality and goofy humor. (Not too many men can pull off a Taylor Swift lip sync.) Next year, Johnson will be in several films including Central Intelligence with Kevin Hart and Disney’s Moana.
Richard Gere: 70/1
Richard Gere is one of only four men to win the title of “Sexiest Man Alive” twice. But the aging actor hasn’t caused a stir in Hollywood for quite a while. While he did earn a Golden Globe nomination in 2013 for his role in Arbitrage, Gere hasn’t seen much of the limelight since the 2000s. This silver fox may have already passed the torch onto his younger successors.
Chris Brown: 1000/1
Chris Brown has been in the news a lot lately, but not for his musical accomplishments. The singer’s career has yet to recover since getting arrested for domestic violence in 2009. Since then, Brown has been in bar fights, entered rehab, and served time in prison. To say he has slipped into nonexistence is an understatement.
