The world is made up of two people: those who watch the Super Bowl for the game, and those who watch it for the entertainment. This year, neither crowd should be disappointed. While millions will be glued to the offensive onslaught between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, just as many will be tuning in to see Lady Gaga when she takes the stage for the halftime show.
If you’re keen to wager on either the game or the surrounding hoopla, we’ve got you covered with our massive list of Super Bowl 51 props.
Gaga performed an electrifying rendition of the national anthem last year in San Francisco, which led to Twitter being bombarded with calls for her to do this year’s halftime show. Gaga echoed that sentiment, saying she’s been waiting to perform at the Super Bowl since she was four. With the NFL always looking for a way to draw attention to the league, it was a win-win and Gaga got her spot.
Earlier this week the singer announced she will be bringing longtime friend and collaborator Tony Bennett on stage with her to perform. While it may have been an obvious choice for Gaga, it’s an odd choice for the usually raucous Super Bowl halftime, as Bennett is 90 years-old and may not be too appealing to the regular football fan. However, Gaga and Bennett have great chemistry and have created a “must-see” brand around themselves, so it’s likely people will stay tuned. Of course, halftime shows are known for surprise appearances. So who else could join her on stage? There’s ample speculation.
There are also burning wardrobe questions. Not only is Gaga known for, let’s say, unconventional attire, but the last time the Super Bowl was in Houston, the infamous Janet Jackson “wardrobe malfunction” marred the halftime show. Gaga has promised to keep it classy. Or at least covered. Do you believe her?
What will she wear, who will join her on stage, and what other celebrities will be in attendance? Here are our odds for the Super Bowl 51 halftime show.
A tracksuit with crazy shoes: 2/1
Daisy Duke shorts: 3/1
A latex costume with cape: 9/2
A football costume: 7/1
A piece of raw meat: 50/1
Costumes for this occasion are usually big and bold, and what else would you expect for a halftime show in Texas? Gaga is known for her crazy costumes, and that includes everything from massive wings to a giant football (we remember you well, left Shark), and Daisy Duke short shorts. I mean, c’mon, she is in Texas after all. As for the meat, she wore it at the MTV Video Awards back in 2010, and who says she won’t do it again? Texans do love good BBQ!
A political statement: 13/7
A country feel: 7/3
Hundreds of backup dancers: 4/1
A performance from the stadium roof: 9/1
Rumours have been flying that part of the show will be held on the roof of NRG Stadium. While that sounds very Gaga, the league might not be too keen on it. One thing that is likely: Gaga throwing insults at Donald Trump in some way, shape, or form.
Just Dance: 3/1
Poker Face: 9/2
Cheek to Cheek: 6/1
Bad Romance: 8/1
Not only are these songs some of her most popular hits, they’re also ones that will kick start a crowd – except for Cheek to Cheek, that is. But with Tony Bennett joining her, you know she’ll be performing something off their collaborative album.
Florence Welch: 5/2
Kendrick Lamar: 4/1
Elton John: 75/1
As mentioned, Gaga’s frequent partner-in-crime, Tony Bennett, will join her on stage, barring any last-minute issues. But there is usually a surprise guest at Super Bowl halftime shows who can really get the crowd going. Beyonce was rumoured to be that person, since she hails from Houston. However, with her recent pregnancy reveal, plus the fact she headlined last year, a cameo from Bey isn’t likely. Kendrick Lamar, Florence Welch, Beck, and Elton John have all collaborated with Lady Gaga before. Since she’s bringing out Bennett, Sir Elton isn’t likely to be on the guest list.
Samuel L. Jackson: 1/4
Ben Affleck & Matt Damon: 1/3
Mark Wahlberg: 1/3
George H.W & George W. Bush: 3/2
Beyonce and/or Solange: 4/1
Samuel L. Jackson is the biggest celebrity Falcons fan. Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon are die-hard Pats supporters. There’s a good chance they’re all in attendance, unless they have other commitments.
As for the Bushes, they hail from Houston and have always been huge supporters of any sports team in the city. Same story for Beyonce and Solange, although with Bey’s pregnancy news, she may not want to be in the media spotlight.
