If you want some idea of how the Emmy nomination votes will pan out, look no further than the Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards. The nominations for the TCA Awards were just announced yesterday (June 19th), and the television critics have voted in a nice, diverse mix of picks.
Once again, HBO leads the charge with 12 nominations. With shows like The Leftovers, Big Little Lies, Veep, and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, it’s no surprise that the premier provider of prestige television is raking in the nominations.
However, it’s Atlanta (FX), This Is Us (NBC), and The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) making headlines. All three shows garnered four nominations, apiece, including a nod for the marquee “Program of the Year” award.
We’ll find out the results on August 5th. Today, we set the odds on the favorites.
The Handmaid’s Tale has earned Hulu its first-ever TCA nomination, and the show opens as the favorite to take the big prize. The dystopian drama, based on a novel by Margaret Atwood, was met with universal acclaim and glowing reviews.
Donald Glover’s Atlanta is one of the freshest, most original shows we’ve seen in a long time. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, it’s no surprise that it’s beloved by the Television Critics Association.
NBC’s This Is Us is the only nomination for one of the the “Big Three” networks (ABC, CBS, NBC). The show was overlooked at the Golden Globe Awards, but perhaps the TCA will be more generous.
Also in the running is HBO’s Big Little Lies and The Leftovers, as well as Netflix’s Stranger Things.
It’s going to be a tough year for any of these shows to sweep all four of their categories. All three are contesting “Outstanding New Program” and “Program of the Year,” so it’s going to require a blowout to go four-for-four.
The Handmaid’s Tale stands the best chance. Elisabeth Moss’ performance puts her in good standing for the “Individual Achievement in Drama” award, and it’s the favorite to take “Outstanding Achievement in Drama.”
HBO has 12 nominations spread out over almost every category. With so much quality programming, they’ll be sure to pick up their fair share. FX is just one short with 11 nominations, but it’s mostly pinning its hopes to Atlanta and Fargo.
Streaming services Netflix and Hulu continue to gain ground on the networks, but for now, they’ll have to take a backseat to HBO and FX.
