Traumatic TV Odds: Death comes to GoT and Walking Dead (again)

March 18, 2016Damon Hart

For those of you who haven’t caught up to the rest of the world in your television viewing habits, below are some Game of Thrones and Walking Dead spoilers. You’ve been warned!

It’s time for the television heavyweights – which are both known for offing much-loved characters – to go head-to-head in a trial by combat. With The Walking Dead just about to wrap up Season 6, and Game of Thrones about to start their sixth season, who will live and who will die? Which show will do the most killing?

Below are some odds on who you shouldn’t grow too attached to.

Game of Thrones – Season 6 Odds

Winter is coming, well spring anyway. The sixth season of “television crack,” a.k.a Game of Thrones, is set to premier on April 24th on HBO at its usual 9:00 PM time slot.

The end of Season 5 left everyone a wee bit upset and bewildered. Our poor Jon Snow was stabbed in the back, well he was literally stabbed all over, and left for dead in the powdery substance he’s named for.

Obviously, in previous seasons, it was tough to put down any betting lines on what could happen. George R.R. Martin had written the next book, and so people who spent time doing this thing called “reading,” knew exactly what was coming.

Martin hasn’t finished writing the new book, Winds of Winter, though. So for the first time ever, Season 6 will become a spoiler for his new novel. Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff can go rogue — with a rough outline from Martin of course.

Nobody has a clue about what’s in store for the upcoming season. So I’ve decided to lay down some props on likely and unlikely scenarios.

Obviously, the first piece of business we need to get out of the way is the following: will Jon Snow return? Actor Kit Harington has finally confirmed that he will be returning to the role, but in what capacity? Nobody knows.

Odds on how Jon Snow Returns in Season 6 of Game of Thrones

How will Jon Snow return? Remember, unless you cut off the head and burn the body, never say never about dead characters coming back to life.

Jon Snow is resurrected as himself: 1/1
Jon Snow is reborn as the great Azor Ahai: 2/1
Jon Snow is resurrected and returns as Jon Stark: 3/1
Jon Snow returns in a flashback: 5/1
Jon Snow returns in a dream: 5/1
Jon Snow never actually died and recovers: 6/1
Jon Snow uses warg powers and becomes Ghost (his direwolf): 10/1
Jon Snow comes back as a white walker: 15/1
Jon Snow won’t return and is as dead as a doornail: 25/1

Those are the most likely Jon Snow scenarios that could play out this season. But it wouldn’t be GoT without a few other major characters being killed off. Below is a list of those most likely to meet a gruesome end.

Odds on which major character(s) will be killed off in Season 6 of Game of Thrones

Jorah Mormont: 1/1
Balon Greyjoy: 2/1
Roose Bolton: 2/1
Margaery Tyrell: 3/1
Ramsay Bolton: 4/1
Meera Reed: 5/1
Ellaria Sand: 5/1
Rickon Stark: 8/1
Brienne of Tarth: 8/1
Osha: 10/1
High Sparrow: 10/1
Tommen Baratheon: 15/1
Theon Greyjoy: 20/1
Cersei Lannister: 25/1
Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish: 50/1
Sansa Stark: 50/1

Odds on the cause of the first major death in Season 6 of Game of Thrones

Greyscale: 2/1
Beheading: 7/3
Hanging: 7/3
Sword: 3/1
Beating: 4/1
Hired assassin: 4/1
White Walker: 4/1
Poison: 5/1
Direwolf: 7/1
Fall off the wall: 10/1
Lord of Light Shadow Assassin Magic: 15/1

The Walking Dead – Season 6 and 7 Odds

As we enter the home stretch on The Walking Dead Season 6 with the knowledge that the big baddie Negan will arrive shortly, you know there is still more death around the corner.

Jessie, Sam, and Ron died in the midseason premiere and a handful of random characters have died since, but who will be the next major character to kick the bucket?

Odds on which major character(s) will die in The Walking Dead Season 6 finale

Glenn Rhee: 1/2

Glenn is the odds-on favorite to meet the grim reaper. Why? Because if you’ve read the comics, Negan beats the former pizza delivery boy to death as an act of revenge for killing some of his men.

The show hasn’t always followed the comics but Glenn’s death has been foreshadowed for years (baseball bat). Is the show preparing us for Glenn’s death, or misdirecting us so that we’ll be even more shocked when they kill off a different character, such as Daryl, Michonne, Morgan, or Abraham?

Abraham Ford: 1/1

While filming Season 6, actor Michael Cudlitz actually suggested his character was going to be killed off. Given Abe’s recent behavior in Episode 11 – where he gets all philosophical and starts questioning whether or not he could ever have a family again – my guess is he’s about to get knocked off. But maybe Abraham won’t go down the same road as his character does in the comics. It’s quite possible the show creators will right that wrong.

Tara Chambler : 4/1

Actress Alanna Masterson is pregnant so there’s been a lot of speculation that her character could end up dead by the end of Season 6. It’s hard to make the Tara character pregnant when she is a full-fledged lesbian. However, the show could use film tricks to hide the pregnancy, which they have done before.

Daryl Dixon: 9/1

You know this series is looking to cause more shock and awe, and maybe it’s time that they really take things to a whole new level. Nobody wants to see fan-favorite Daryl die, but if Negan doesn’t kill Glenn, then Daryl could be in the cross hairs. There are some interesting online theories out there on why Daryl could be next. If he manages to survive Season 6, all bets are off in Season 7.

Speaking of Season 7, below are the odds on who will be killed next season, if they’re lucky enough to survive the Season 6 finale.

Odds on which character(s) will die in Season 7

Spencer Monroe: 1/9
Tara Chambler: 1/4
Morgan Jones: 1/4
Maggie Greene: 1/1
Rosita Espinosa: 3/2
Carol Peletier: 3/2
Father Gabriel: 2/1
Daryl Dixon: 3/1
Michonne: 9/1
Rick Grimes: 19/1
Carl Grimes: 25/1

Odds on who will kill off more main characters before the end of each season

Neither show has ever cared about your feelings. Don’t get too attached because HBO and AMC will rip your heart out and do the Mexican hat dance all over it. Nobody is ever safe.

Which show will kill off more main characters in their respective seasons in 2016? I have picked five major characters from each show and given the odds on which program will kill more of them off.

The Walking Dead Season 6: 1/2
Daryl Dixon
Rick Grimes
Michonne
Carol Peletier
Glenn Rhee

Game of Thrones: 2/1
Sansa Stark
Daenerys Targaryen
Arya Stark
Jaime Lannister
Cersei Lannister

Nobody is safe in GoT but this upcoming season will focus more on bringing the dead back to life than actually killing anyone you might be attached too.

All of the above is pure speculation and, if Game of Thrones has shown us anything, it’s that it’s not afraid to shock you. That said, my guess is that there will be far more death from Zombies in Season 6 of The Walking Dead than from their White Walker brethren on Season 6 of GoT.
