Kathy Griffin found herself in hot water yesterday when a photo of her holding up a prop resembling a beheaded Donald Trump was leaked by TMZ. The widespread condemnation forced Griffin into damage control and she quickly tweeted an apology video.
“I beg for your forgiveness,” she pleaded. “I went too far.”
Anderson Cooper called the picture “disgusting” over Twitter and Chelsea Clinton labeled it “vile and wrong”. Donald Trump Jr. said it was “disgusting but not surprising” and Mitt Romney branded it “repugnant”. I could go on, but there’s really only so many different ways you can say the same thing.
CNN responded as well, saying: “We found what she did disgusting and offensive.” Adding, “We are evaluating New Year’s Eve and have made no decisions at this point.”
Along with Anderson Cooper, Griffin is a longtime co-host of the network’s New Year’s Eve coverage. Losing the gig would be a huge blow for her.
The U.S Secret Service has also gotten involved, tweeting: “On it! @SecretService has a robust protective intelligence division that monitors open source reporting & social media to evaluate threats.” But it’s extremely unlikely that they’ll investigate the incident as a serious threat.
The provocative comedian is well-accustomed to controversy, but she’s never received a reaction quite like this. Suddenly, there’s a lot at stake, and she risks losing a lot because of it.
Donald Trump has yet to respond to the picture, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if he hit back at her on Twitter. Could Kathy Griffin become the new Rosie O’Donnell?
Tomorrow will be a new day and this story (along with Griffin) will quickly fade into the background. But for now, let’s consider the odds. What’s in store for the edgy comedian? Who will be next to condemn her? Let’s look at the numbers.
