Television is set for a shake up thanks to Stephen Colbert coming to late night and a number of reboots either rumored or already on the go. Not everything is changing, of course; weekend stalwart Saturday Night Live has already tapped a couple familiar names for hosting duties in the upcoming season.
How will Colbert and the reboots fare? And who else is going to take the stage at 30 Rock?
Here’s our take!
Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live is getting ready for its 41st season. The ground-breaking show is starting with a bang as three big-name hosts have already been announced: Miley Cyrus, Amy Schumer, and Tracy Morgan.
With an upcoming election, we are sure to get a lot of political satire this year. Like Sarah Palin in 2008, we may see Donald Trump make an appearance to counter the barrage of jokes at his expense.
In terms of hosts, we’re apt to see some old favorites (like Alec Baldwin, who has hosted the show a record 16 times) and some fresh faces (like Jon Stewart, who now has a lot more free time). And don’t rule out a hosting turn from the zeitgeisty Caitlin Jenner, either.
The show’s selection of its hosts is oftentimes mind-boggling and unpredictable, much like the show itself. So it’s a bit tricky predicting who will host SNL this season. But here it is. Live from my workspace, it’s Saturday Night Odds!
Odds to host SNL in Season 41:
Late Show with Stephen Colbert
On September 8th, Stephen Colbert will drop the character of Stephen Colbert and reveal to the world … Stephen Colbert! (If you ever watched The Colbert Report, you shouldn’t have trouble making sense of that. If you never watched The Colbert Report, for shame!)
The world is in a state of nervous excitement as we wait to see who Stephen really is. Stephen, himself, must be feeling just as nervous as he prepares to take over from the legendary David Letterman.
At least at the outset, Colbert will bring his relatively young audience over from The Colbert Report while, at the same time, inheriting Letterman’s aging demographic. This is both a blessing and a curse. He will likely start his show with an enormous viewership, but will have to appeal to a broad collection of comedic sensibilities and tastes if he is going to keep it.
How successful will he be, and who is he going to have on? Here are our picks:
Odds on guests for the first week of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert:
Over/under on first-week viewership: 12 million viewers, total, for the four-day first week (3 million average)
Prediction on “Sweeps Weeks” (Oct. 29 – Nov. 25) ratings among adults 18-49 for Colbert and the competition:
Over/under on how many years Colbert will last as host of the Late Show: 7 years
Odds David Letterman will appear as a guest in the first year: 1/3
The reboot is becoming more and more common in both TV and movies these days. (Writers and producers have, evidently, gotten too lazy to even make proper sequels.) Re-hashing old material isn’t always a recipe for success, though, even if the original was much loved – perhaps especially if the original was much loved. A good reboot needs to add something new, while keeping the spirit of its predecessor.
Reboots of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The X-Files are already in the works, with Will Smith, David Duchovny, and Gillian Anderson returning to the roles they made famous.
Which of the reboots will survive the longest, and which former hit will get the reboot treatment next?
