Saturday Night Live may be on hiatus, but the news cycle definitely isn’t.
In order to keep up with the frenetic pace of the news (and also cash in on a 23-year high in viewership), Colin Jost and Michael Che return for a four-week SNL Weekend Update Thursday.
Starting August 10th, the Update hosts will spearhead the stand-alone show on NBC during prime-time (9pm ET). There’s so much to cover (all Trump-related, of course): North Korea, the 17-day golf vacation, Spicer, the Mooch… The list goes on.
Will Update Thursday continue to ride the SNL ratings boom? Who will be featured on the show? And will Trump take note (not likely)? Here are the odds.
SNL 42 was the most-watched season in 23 years, averaging nearly 11 million viewers. The stand-alone Update show will not benefit from the pull of a celebrity host, but they may make up for that with their prime-time spot.
The first iteration of Weekend Update: Summer Edition pulled in an impressive average of 9.5 million, and with SNL mania at a two-decade high, we should expect some even bigger numbers.
Alec Baldwin: 1/1
Cecily Strong: 2/1
Al Franken: 4/1
Bill Hader: 9/1
Seth Meyers: 9/1
Chevy Chase: 99/1
Forget about his role in The Cat in the Hat, Alec Baldwin will be forever remembered for his Trump impression. With the President at the center of almost every story these days, a Baldwin appearance would be a huge asset for the show.
We could also see Cecily Strong’s “The Girl You Wish You Never Started a Conversation With” or the “One-Dimensional Female Character In a Male-Driven Comedy” featured. Strong appeared in both episodes of the 2012 Weekend Update Thursday, so it’s likely we’ll see her again.
Former SNL cast member and current Senator Al Franken could (and should) make an appearance. With his feet in both the political and comedy world, he’s perfect for the show. Besides, he has his new book, Giant of the Senate, to promote.
Then there are some former greats, like longtime host Seth Meyers, original host Chevy Chase, and fan favorite Bill Hader.
A stand-alone Update has the potential to be a huge success, but it’s unlikely Saturday Night Live will part with its flagship segment. Weekend Update remains the show’s bread and butter, so it doesn’t make sense to separate it from the show.
Accusing Weekend Update of being Fake News™ doesn’t work quite as well when it actually is fake news. Now that the President is on a 17-day vacation, we should expect him to be watching even more television. So there’s a very good chance he’ll be watching Jost and Che lampoon him during prime-time.
We know for sure that he won’t like what he sees, but will he respond with his twitter fingers?
