Here at OG, we’ve been following Bill Foley’s efforts to bring an NHL club to Las Vegas pretty intently. A major league sports team is really the one thing that the Vegas entertainment scene is missing.
In late July, the proposal from Foley’s company – Black Knight Sports and Entertainment LLC – moved onto the second phase of the process (as did the proposal from Quebec City), which required a significant downpayment.
Now word has come down that Black Knight’s proposal has advanced to the third (and final) stage of the process.
The NHL is downplaying the significance of moving onto the third stage, stating that it “only means that [Black Knight has] satisfied requirements of this phase and get to progress to more comprehensive due diligence and additional submission requirements.”
However, as the USA Today reported, moving onto the next stage may be more significant than the league is letting on: “A person familiar with the process told The Associated Press that the third stage involves the NHL reviewing the company’s business plan and revenue projections. If approved, the league would be in a position to award an expansion franchise as early as next month. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the NHL has not provided details of the process.”
Is it too early to consider this a done deal? Yes. But only slightly. The league wants to see the proposal succeed, and we know that Foley desperately wants the same. In all likelihood, it’s only a matter of time before our tax dollars are artificially cooling a 20,000-seat stadium in the middle of the desert and, Global Warming be damned, I’m ok with that!
