Welcome to this week’s edition of What’s Going On? — a completely biased take on the week’s biggest pop-culture stories, told through numbers, odds, and props because this is Vegas after all. Here I’ll fill you in on (my version of) the best and worst from all of your (my) favorite celebs, musicians, and even politicians, plus a few stories that are just begging to be shared. This is the stuff the group chat will thank you for. Or, at the very least, not kick you out for.
While last week started on a somber note, this week’s top stories include a scandal accusation against one of comedy’s biggest stars (that aren’t far from the truth, it turns out!), a drastically life-altering decision for a couple of best friends, and some highlights from the 2017 Emmy awards.
There is — as always — some good, some bad, and some kind-of-ugly-but-can’t-look-away in the mix, but, and I speak only for myself, that’s kind of what keeps things interesting, isn’t it?
Hart himself took to social media to face the accusation head on, admitting that he had made a “bad error in judgement” by “putting [himself] in a bad environment where only bad things can happen” — which “they did.”
It isn’t the first time Hart has been accused of cheating — or the first time he has copped to it. There were reports back in July that he had been involved with another woman, with photos of the actor and said woman in a car outside a Miami nightclub — although his response that time was a little less serious. People have also questioned the timeline of his current relationship, after a tweet from his current wife, Eniko Parrish, claimed the couple had been together eight years … putting the start of their relationship in the middle of his first marriage to Torrei Hart.
Whether or not he would have admitted this recent infidelity without a multi-million dollar threat at his door, we may never know. At the very least, Hart seems to understand he messed up. He says that he has “gotta do better” and, apparently, he will. Admission is the first step, right?
Odds of Hart taking legal action against “anonymous”: 1/10
Hart’s team has released a statement, assuring an investigation is being launched into the five W’s of this extortion attempt. If and when someone is pinpointed as the suspect, you can bet that Hart’s legal team will move into high gear to take action against them.
Odds Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish stay together: 1/4
Sources say that Eniko is not ready to give up her marriage to Hart, and that the couple plan to work through their issues. With his admission of guilt and promise to do better, I hope that the two of them truly can make it work.
Selena Gomez shocked fans on Thursday (Sept. 14th) when she revealed via Instagram that, due to complications caused by Lupus, she had undergone kidney transplant surgery in the summer. While Gomez has been open about her struggles with the autoimmune disorder, the surgery came as quite a shock to her 127 million followers as the singer had managed to keep the entire ordeal completely under wraps — a truly impressive feat. (Seriously, how did no one catch wind of this? There was some high-level, Area 51-worthy conspiring going on there, you guys. I am more than impressed.)
In the emotional post, Selena thanked her family and “incredible team” of doctors for all they had done to support her, both pre and post-surgery, but the biggest thank-you’s were saved for her friend, Francia Raisa, who gave Gomez “the ultimate gift and sacrifice” by donating her kidney. Ultimate gift is right! Suddenly my refusal to accept gas money last weekend doesn’t seem quite so generous, for some reason.
Honestly, if their friendship doesn’t redefine #squadgoals, then I don’t know what ever could. This is the sort of thing that is a whole lot easier said than done, but when it came time for the rubber to meet the road, Francia Raisa straight up raised the bar to a brand-new height.
I’ve got some serious thinking to do about Christmas presents this year.
Odds that Selena’s security team gets a hefty bonus this holiday season: 1/3
Those guys have done the near-impossible by keeping the Kween of Instagram out of the paparazzi’s eyes for months. Kudos given where kudos earned.
Odds of Selena and the Weeknd getting married without any of us knowing: 9/1
I put nothing past her and her team anymore, but there is nothing (save a royal baby) that the general public anticipates more more than a potential celeb wedding. Plus, Selena and Abel are pretty open about how crazy they are for one another.
Odds that Fergie is dating someone within the next month: 5/4
Odds of Duhamel and Fergie getting back together: 20/1
The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aired this Sunday night, and if you ask me (which you are doing by reading this), it was a bit of a mixed bag. Yes, okay, there were some pretty historic wins, but there was also former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, so what am I supposed to do with all these differing emotions? Someone, please tell me!
Let’s stick with the mostly-good stuff, though.
Odds of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss winning Best Actress in a Comedy for a seventh year in a row: 1/3
An entire decade has gone by since Melissa McCarthy starred in Cook-Off!, a mockumentary that basically no one knew existed until this week. Originally premiering at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen back in 2007, the film was shelved for years and years — until now. On Tuesday, September 19th, Lionsgate released a trailer, after picking the film up off the floor, and breathing new life into it. The story follows several “ordinary people” who are selected to compete in a cooking competition, vying for a million-dollar prize, and has several faces you’ll recognize alongside of McCarthy. Ben Falcone (McCarthy’s writing partner and husband) joins the cast, as do Niecy Nash, Diedrich Bader, and Wendi McLendon-Covey, to name a few.
The film is now slated for wide release in theatres November 17th (just in time for Thanksgiving, which feels fairly appropriate), and as someone who really enjoys eccentric niche comedies (think Best in Show), I couldn’t be more excited.
O/U on how much Cook-Off! brings in on opening weekend: $40 million
Odds that Cook-Off! is the first in a new trend of reviving movies from the cutting-room floor: 9/1
