It was his first PokerStars Championship title, and Julian Stuer took the phrase “go big or go home” to heart. Almost doubling his previous live earnings, the German crushed the €25,750 High Roller at the 2017 PokerStars Championship for a grand prize of over €1 million.
Three days saw 186 people eliminated, 27 of whom returned for the final day. All final-day players saw a payout, but only first prize topped €1 million. Though it was his first championship, Stuer did place in a PokerStars-sponsored event last year when he took second at the €25,500 Single-Day High Rollers in the European Poker Tour 2013 Prague festival.
Jimmy Guerrero fell in ninth to sew up the final table of eight. The first to go of the surviors was Julian Thomas, the final table’s only other German. Both Thomas and Guerrero were taken down by Thomas Muehloecker, who called the eight-place finisher’s suited 8,6 with an A,J.
After also eliminating Frenchman Ekrem Sanioglu in seventh, Muehloecker became the second biggest stack with a Q,J that turned into two pair.
Stuer finally got in on the final table action after butting heads with Charlie Carrel. The Englishman four-bet shoved with a suited Q,7 but Stuer’s aces sent him home with €235,400. Javier Gomez Zapatero challenged Stuer with a A,8 next, but met a similar end when the eventual winner pulled out a straight on a J,10 pocket.
The final three were locked after Dario Sammartino got pocket aces in against Stuer’s jacks. What started as a promising hand turned sour for the Italian when a flush turned up for Stuer, eliminating Sammartino with €384,340 in his pocket.
By the time Stuer eliminated Muehloecker with pocket eights, the former had a 7-1 lead over John Juanda going into heads-up play.
Juana lost an early hand and was left with just 20 big blinds before shoving with an A,10. Stuer’s K,J reigned supreme and the Indonesian took home a second place prize of €683,900.
Final table results:
The PokerStars Festival Chile starts May 21st, followed by the PokerStars Championship Sochi on May 23rd.
