Marshall White stepped out in a big way this weekend when he grabbed the first place win in the first event of the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City, topping a massive field of 3,570 to win the Kickoff $2 Million Guaranteed event. White place a couple times in the Borgata Open through this years, but his win on Saturday cashed with nearly quadruple the prize money of his only other first-place WPT win in 2014.
The Borgata kick off event is always massive – and this year was no exception. It started in six flights and some well-known players, like Scott Baumstein and Kevin Calenzo, weren’t able to make it to the impressive final nine.
The final table began with White second in chip count – about 6 million behind the 18.6 million of Ryan Currier. The dynamic quickly shifted, however, when Currier lost an early hand with queens to LJ Sande and White scored the first elimiantion of the final table, sending Anthony Saludez to the rail with A-K against J-10. Saludez got $24,277 for his efforts and White doubled his chip count to a cool 25 million.
A quick series of eliminations led just five players remaining – and it was down to three in just a few hands. Nick Pupillo, a young player from Illinois, came in to the final table without much to show but managed to knock both out Chris Biemer (in fifth) and deal series damage to Greg Himmelbrand when he went all-in against the pair. Himmelbrand was left in the short stack while Pupillo show to second place, and he fell in fourth shortly after for $119,540.
Sande hit the rail in third for $142,749 after White took him out with pocket twos, and a heads-up battle began between two relatively evenly-matched players for the biggest cash of their careers.
In the end, it was a two of clubs that would decide the ultimate winner. Pupillo shoved on an K-7-5-3-2 board holding an A-2 for the 5-high straight, but White managed a victory with the two completed his ace-high club flush. Pupillo’s second place money – $217,535 – was still the highest of his career.
