The World Series of Poker (WSOP) International Circuit Main Event wrapped up after naming Marcin Chmielewski the winner. The Polish player triumphed after a lengthy heads-up battle and took home over €183,000 from the tournament in Rozvadov, Czech Republic.
Germany’s Markus Prinz was the chip leader when the final day started but, by the time the final table rolled around, he wasn’t long for this world. It took just one hand for him to bust, running queens into the kings of fellow Pole Lukasz Wasek and getting sent home with just over €16,000 for his ninth-place finish.
The only American player that made it to the final table, Jeremy Williams, also had a short-lived run at the final table, finishing in eighth place, followed by Przemyslaw Piotrowski in seventh. Despite knocking out his Polish countrymen, Wasek couldn’t gain traction and busted in sixth place. Chi Quay Hoang of Germany followed in fifth with a €65,170 payday.
After Jiri Horak was eliminated in fourth, Czech player Michal Schuh was the chip leader and favorite for the title. However, he surrendered the lead soon after three-handed play began and ultimately went home in third; he misplaced confidence in a Q-10, and Boris Kotleba of Slovakia challenged him with pocket aces. That left Chmielewski to battle it out with the Slovakian for the win.
At the beginning of heads-up play, Kotleba had a 2-to-1 chip lead that continued to grow as the night drew on. Eventually, the leader started to fade and a series of well-timed hands helped Chmielewski sneak up on him. It was almost 3:00 a.m. by the time the final hand occurred. Chmielewski managed a straight on the river to defeat Kotleba, who had pocket threes, and the Slovakian won €115,520 for second place.
“This tournament was difficult for me,” Chmielewski told PokerNews after his win. “But the heads-up may [have been] the most difficult. I was tired but my opponent played well and he had three times as many chips as me.”
