This year’s European Poker Tour (EPT) €25,750 High Roller in Malta was no joke; it took three days and saw millions of Euros change hands in the blink of an eye, but after all the eliminations were over, one player remained. David Yan, from New Zealand, was the eventual champion, walking away with almost half a million Euros – not bad for a 23-year-old.
An international final table of six saw people from all over the world battling for the top prize. Ole Schemion of Germany started out as the shortest stack and wasn’t able to claw back; he was the first to go after he ran pocket jacks into Yan’s pair of kings early on.
That was the last bit of action for hours – no player was willing to risk his massive pile and five-handed play dragged on. Mikita Badziakousk finally broke the silence and was eliminated by Max Silver in fifth place. Silver’s luck was short-lived, however. He was the next to go after a big hand against Yan, his roommate for the tournament, left him short stacked. Yan held a pair of jacks and Silver’s A-Q just couldn’t measure up. He was eliminated shortly thereafter at the hand of Oleksii Khoroshenin.
The Ukrainian Khoroshenin went home in third. The EPT Season 10 Vienna Champion busted out against Ramin Hajiyev.
That set up heads-up play between Hajiyev and Yan, and the trend of score-a-knockout-then-bust continued, to Hajiyev’s misfortune. The two finalists were relatively evenly matched in chips at the outset, but that wouldn’t last long. A rare failed bluff sent the Azerbaijan-native home, leaving Yan to be crowned the champion.
Final table results:
Before this massive win, Yan had already created quite a name for himself at home and abroad. He is first New Zealand’s all-time money list and has secured first-place wins all over the world, including at the WSOP No Limit Hold’em Main Event in Berlin and the 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship. He also scored second in the $25,000 No Limit Hold-em Main Event at the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific.
The Malta event was his sixth EPT finale table of the year and this third title. Just this year, the young player has over $1.5 million in earnings. He is currently 19th in Card Player‘s Player of the Year Rankings.
