Just three men remain in the contest for what is arguably the most coveted title in poker. After day 2 of the 2015 World Series of Poker (WSOP), three more players were eliminated from the November Nine, leaving Joe McKeehen, Neil Blumenfield, and Joshua Beckley to battle it out for the championship.
Longtime chip leader McKeehen continued his domination throughout the second day and now boasts a chip-count three times that of his closest opponent: Blumenfield. Ofer Zvi Stern, who entered day two with the second-highest chip count, saw his performance plummet and he was eliminated before day’s end. Beckley, who was fifth in the standings leaving day 1, managed to hold on and secure the third-place spot going into the third day.
For the second day in a row, a player busted in just the second hand. Short-stacked Thomas Cannuli couldn’t manage a comeback despite shoving for 1.4 million with A♤, A♧. Max Steinberg followed, going all-in with 10♡, 10♢. The flop came J♧, 10♤, 6♧ and there was nothing Cannuli could do. The turn and river (Q♢, 8♤) didn’t bring the bullet Cannuli needed and he was eliminated in sixth place with a $1,426,283 payout.
Cannuli’s elimination made Beckley the short-stack, but he revived his tournament life on hand no. 98, doubling up with A♤, A♡. Stern called Beckley’s 14.6 million all-in with a 10♤, 9♤. The board – 7♢, 5♢, 2♧, 3♤, 2♢ – added nothing to either players’ hand and Beckley’s pair prevailed, making Stern the new low man.
Ultimately, Stern was the next to go when he failed to come out on top in a head-to-head with Blumenfield. The Israeli was sent home with $1,911,432.
Just one more player was eliminated before play halted. McKeehan opened play on hand no. 143 with a 2 million bet and Steinberg shoved all in. McKeehan called and his A♢, Q♧ proved to be dominating Steinberg’s A♡, J♢. A lackluster board (9♢, 7♧, 5♤, 8♧, 3♢) brought Steinberg’s elimination.
Play will resume at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN on Tuesday.
