Mohsin Charania hoped to earn his third WPT Rolling Thunder $3,500 Main Event title this year, but Harrison Gimbel – a 25-year-old wunderkind from Jupiter, Fla. – had other ideas. Gimbel captured his first World Poker Tour title this weekend after he topped a 409-player field including a tough final table. The relative youngster earned the top prize of $275,112.
The final table had just six players and deep stacks. It took more than 50 hands for the first player, Derek Wolters, to be eliminated. Wolters held a K♢, 10♢ against Gimbel, who held J♢, 9♧. The board had Wolters ahead (9♡, 8♢, 5♤, 10♡), but the river (9♢) gave the eventual winner the set he needed. Wolters earned $54,970 for sixth place.
It had been a while since Hafiz Khan, who placed fifth, earned a live cash. (His last was in June 2015 at the World Series of Poker.) But he reignited his fire with a $68,712 score. He was sent home by Russell Garrett and his A♧, Q♢.
Markus Gonsalves was the next to go in fourth place. On hand 107, Garrett lost a flip to Charania and earned $123,682 for third.
The final two players went into heads-up fairly even and it took over 100 hands before one of them went all-in for the first time. On hand 222, Gimbel put Charania all-in before the flop. Gimbel held a 5♡, 4♡ against Charania’s dominant K♡, Q♡, but Gimbel came out on top when he hit runner-runner on the turn and river (J♤, 3♤, 3♡, 5♢, 5♤).
Final table results:
Previously, Gimbel claimed the 2009 Florida State Poker Championship Event when he was just 18 years old, and the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event title for $2.2 million at just 19. His first-place finish this weekend also came with a $15,000 entry into the season-ending WPT Tournament of Champions.
