The massive pot at the World Poker Tour Five Diamond $100,000 Super High Roller proved to be too much for just one person, and the top two finishers ended up chopping for scores of over $1 million each. Only 38 players showed up to the high roller event, which was held at the same time as the last ever European Poker Tour Prague.
Fifteen players returned for the second day of play with Christian Christner of Germany in the lead. Dan Coleman and David Peters were close on his heels but neither would make it to the final table. Peters was the last to go home empty handed when he was eliminated in seventh-place just before the six-handed final table began.
Ankush Mandavia was the first to be sent home from the final table when his pocket sixes couldn’t measure up to the A-9 of Erik Seidel. A massive pot between Seidel and Shakerchi followed, knocking the latter into the short stack and giving Seidel a massive boost.
Shakerchi managed to persevere, however, and it was start-of-day chip leader Christner who couldn’t make the board connect. Jan Schwippert ran an A-J into Christner’s K-4 and the fifth-place finisher snagged $223,400. Seidel managed a few big pots in his time at the table but it wasn’t enough to follow through and he was eliminated in fourth by a full house belonging to Schwippert.
Three handed-play wasn’t a particularly long affair, and Shakerchi followed Seidel out for $521,360 after being eliminated by Schwippert.
Schwippert of Austria and American Tom Marchese were the final two, and it only took 10 minutes of play for the pair to agree to a chop. The original pots were to be $1,564,080 for first and $893,760 for second, but the two settled on $1,439,274 and $1,018,566, ending play and naming Schwippert the champ.
