Travis Hartshorn added a little spice to his holiday weekend with an impressive $302,978 paycheck from the Borgata Fall Poker Open Championship. It’s a cash total equal to nearly half of his previous live tournament earnings.
Forty-five players found themselves in the money, with David Vamplew being the last player to bust before the final table. After finding himself in a three-bet pot with Hartshorn, his pair of aces wasn’t enough when the eventual winner flopped a set of fives. That move sent Hartshorn into the final table with a massive lead.
Despite his momentum, an early backslide saw Hartshorn briefly surrender the lead to David Johnston. Valerie Novak and Roger Dickerman were eliminated next, before Hartshorn, Johnston, and Daniel Fischer got into a tough three-way battle.
Johnston picked up aces and raised, followed by Hartshorn, before Fisher went all-in for almost 1.6 million. But an A, Q couldn’t save Fisher, sending him home in seventh, and giving Johnston an even bigger lead before the group took a break.
When the table returned, Christopher O’Hara had just 20 big blinds which he shoved while holding a K, 9, called by David Butkus. But when Butkus managed to pull out pocket nines, O’Hara was sent home in sixth, followed by Eilo Fox, a World Series of Poker champion, in fifth.
Butkus was eliminated after he butt heads with Hartshorn. Gloria Jackson went away in third. She was the first player to cash out with more than $100K.
Heads-up play then began between Johnston and Hartshorn, with Hartshorn holding a 2-1 advantage. Despite his major lead, the final two battled it out for more than five hours. On the final hand, Johnston went all-in with a suited K, J, and was looking for improvement as he was up against the pocket eights of Hartshorn. The board helped no one, and Johnston banked $174,909 for a second-place finish.
