The small town of Tama, Iowa, isn’t a major player on the US poker scene, but the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) stop at Meskwaki casino often produces six-figure payouts. This year, 409 entrants competed for the top prize and the winner, Keith Heine, took home the biggest cash in his career by far, adding $100,981 to his previous pile of $12,000.
The relative rookie took down some season vets on his way to the title, defeating Shawn Roberts (three-time Heartland Poker Tour winner) and MSPT champions Muneer Ahmed and Dan Sun at the final table.
Roberts was the short stack when the final table of ten began and he was sent packing first.
Chris Scionti was eliminated in ninth (for $7,910); he shoved with sixes and ran head first into Heine’s A♤, A♢.
Heine sent Dan Sun home in eighth during Level 29 while holding an A♢, 8♢. Both players checked after an A♤, 3♡, 9♧ flop. After a 9♢ turn, Sun shipped for 605,000 holding A♡, 7♤. The river showed a 2♧ and that was all she wrote.
Chunlei Yuan bluffed on a blind-versus-blind and became the third player to fall to Heine in seventh.
By the time Kevin Berthelsen and Muneer Ahmed went home in sixth and fifth, respectively, Heine had a commanding chip lead equivalent to about 40 big blinds. He was then responsible for the elimination of Jason Crews and TJ Ryan, putting him way ahead of Ryan Phan when the two entered heads-up play.
That short stack was the kiss of death for Phan, who was quickly down to his last few big blinds. He used it to call while holding a 5♡, 3♡ against Heine’s J♢, 10♡. The flop (K♢, J♤, 10♧) left Phan in serious trouble and the 7♢ turn meant there was nothing he could do. The runner-up win earned him $58,296.
