Day 1 at the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $100,000 Super High Roller trimmed the field to 32, but late registrants brought the total number of competitors to 58 and the prize pool to a whopping $5,626,000.
Eight players made the money and, by the end of the third day, Bryn Kenney (who placed third in both 2011 and 2015) was crowned the winner, walking away with $1,687,800.
Kenney’s live-tournament earnings now top $8.3 million.
The final table of six held strong for ages and the chip count fluctuated dramatically. Isaac Haxton was the first to bust against Joe McKeehen.
In the 51st hand, Haxon put a pair of 7s against Mustapha Kanit’s A, 5 when the latter was all in. The next hand, McKeehen ran an A, K against Haxton after Haxton shoved all-in with 10, 9 suited. Haxton took home $360,060 for his sixth-place finish.
Following Haxton’s departure, 31 hands went by before another player was eliminated. David Peters (A, K) lost a bundle after calling a raise from Kanit, who hit a straight on the turn. Three hands later, Peters’ shoved all in with A, 9 but was dominated by Kenney’s A, 10. The board of blanks sent the fifth-place finisher home with $461,340, bringing his tournament winnings over $10 million.
Kanit was the next to go when he went all-in on pocket 7s against A, J. His opponent, Ankush Mandavia, hit a straight on the river, making the low pair obsolete. After Kanit’s knockout, Mandavia held the chip-lead for a while but ultimately crumbled in third when his K, 4 went up against Kenney’s K, 9.
Mandavia’s third-place finish nearly doubled his career live earnings.
Heads-up battle saw Kenney against big-time pro McKeehen, who recently conquered the November Nine, but the eventual winner managed to keep his composure. Going in, Kenney had a small chip lead over McKeehen (7,945,000 vs. 6,550,000) but McKeehen did not go quietly. The top spot swung between the two – at one point Keeney had just ten big blinds left – but he started a double-up spree that eventually resulted in a tournament win.
“It feels great, I didn’t have a Super High Roller win, and no tournament win that you can be proud of, it was always third, second, in these big tournaments and to get a win is just the best,” Kenney told PokerStars after the win.
