Fedor Holz is picking up momentum and showing no signs of slowing down. After winning the winning the World Poker Tour $100,000 Alpha8 Las Vegas in December for $1.589 million, he recently picked up another $3.072 million at the Triton Super High Roller Series $200,000 Cali Cup in the Philippines, topping a field of 45 entrants for a win that almost doubled his live tournament winnings.
The young German was one of 33 players who returned for Day 2 to battle for the $10 million prize pool, which only paid out the top eight. Mike McDonald and Paul Phua busted in the first two money spots, and Steve O’Dwyer held the chip lead to start the six-person final table.
After a run of unsuccessful bluffs on O’Dwyer’s part, Devan Tang took the lead and got straight to business. Daniel Colman was eliminated by Tang in sixth and went home with $502,000. Soon after, Holz pushed onto the scene when he scored against Phil Ivey.
Holz, 22, moved all-in for $1.15 million with a K♧, Q♡ and Ivey called quickly with a Q♧, Q♢. The flop (K♡, 10♢, 5♡) was great for the eventual winner; a 6♢ on the turn and J♡ on the river kept Holz out front. Holz finished off Ivey (fifth-place) when the latter’s Q♤, J♧ fell to the former’s A♡, Q♢.
Holz also took out O’Dwyer in fourth; the Colorado native was sent home with just under $1 million, adding to a nice year for the big winner in this year’s European Poker Tour Prague €50,000 Super High Roller.
Holz then extended his lead over Tang and eventually knocked him out in third.
Heads-up play took only four hands to complete. On the final hand, Holz (7♢, 7♤) raised to $1 million before the flop and Peters went all-in with a A♧, Q♧. The board saw a lot of paint, but not the paint that Peters was looking for (J♡, 5♢, 5♧, K♢, K♡) and Holz’s sevens held up.
The massive score puts Holz in a good place to become Player of the Year and the top money earner for 2016.
