The 2015-16 World Series of Poker Circuit came to an end in New Orleans on Monday, with David Hubbard scoring the season’s final Main Event win, pocketing a pretty $235,500 first-place prize in addition to a WSOP ring and a seat in the Global Poker Championship.
Only 15 entrants survived to the third and final day; Hubbard ranked fifth when play started. Slow stack growth set the Texan up for success and he was in third-place by the time the final table began. His stack continued to grow at the final table when he took out Blake Barousse in ninth.
Ryan Dunn then doubled-up through Hubbard, though, putting a big dent in the champ’s stack. But he was able to score a lucky rebound against Virgil Beddingfield: Hubbard was all-in with pocket eights against Beddingfield’s jacks, but he flopped a set. Beddingfield wound up eighth with $28,013, and the lucky break would be a sign of things to come for the eventual winner.
Corey Brysman went home in seventh and Dunn was close behind. Next, Hubbard scored a big double-up when he went all in with pocket aces against David Slaughter, taking the pot and securing a huge chip lead. Slaughter hit the rail in fifth shortly after.
David Diaz and Riley Fuller were sent home in fourth and third, respectively, after the dinner break.
Hubbard started heads-up play against Jake Dollinger in a small hole. But the status quo was quick to change, and Hubbard quickly knocked Dollinger down to two big blinds. On the final hand, ollinger who moved all in with an ace and king; Hubbard held pocket tens. The flop gave Hubbard the set, but it looked like it wouldn’t be enough when Dollinger scored a straight on the turn.
In a stunning twist, the river brought quads to Hubbard and a swift end to the WSOP season.
“My first ring, it feels really good,” Hubbard told the WSOP.
